What are some good sites that have those Diabetic Dogs (not dogs with diabetes...) for sale?

Boyfriend's mother wants a dog, and she has diabetes that is getting out of control. I know they have those dogs that are trained to assist people with diabetes. Curious if theres a site. I just dont know the official name for them. OR adoption. They are service dogs. Thanks!

  1. They are called service dogs, I am not sure of a website for them.
  2. My Mom has Diabetes. She has three, a chiwawa, terrier mix, and a poodle mix. Is she active? My mom is in her 60's and walks her "mutts" all the time. It's a matter of prefferencse. Some dogs are hyper, some mellow. Have you asked your mom what she wants?
  3. They aren't for sale. They are highly trained and not all dogs are able to cue for low sugar. Try looking up some of the agencies at the Delta society. www.deltasociety.org they may be able to point you in the right direction.
  4. you might try calling the American Diabetes Association or visit their website. I would say to contact an endocrinologist, but not all of them know about such things. Good luck!
  5. Google Service Dogs your state and then write the org. But Diabetic Alert dogs as born not trained just as Sezure Alert Dogs, it is an inborn trait that is built upon, you can not train a dog for chemical imbalance type problems.
  6. If you put in the yahoo search engine the following term there are plenty of links: Diabetic Service Dogs Service dogs for diabetics is what I meant!!!!! I think you misunderstood what I meant. If you actually try it, then you will find some links. I tried it myself... LOL
  7. Diabetic alert dogs are relatively new. They have come out with a method of training them based on using scent of various people's high and low sugar. It can then take the dog a short period of adjustment when placed with a handler. To get a full fledged service dog, you must have a disability as defined by the ADA. A skilled home companion dog performs the same physical tasks, but doesn't have public access training or privileges. A Google search for the term "Diabetic Alert Dog" should give you a good start. They are coming in a variety of sizes to fit in with most lifestyles.
