How many dogs are you allowed to have before you need a kennel license?

I was recently talking about my life's ambitions with my mum. I'm a big dog lover, and I told her I want to move out to a rural area and get about 5-10 dogs. A family member then remarked that if you want more than 4 dogs, you need to have a kennel license, and have to follow kennel regulations. Is this true? All attempts to Google this topic came back with information about how dogs in kennels were required to be vaccinated.

  1. This will be determined by your local government. Contact the animal welfare agency in your area to find out what's allowed. It's not unusual for cities/towns to limit the number of dogs you can keep before you get special approval.
  2. Contact the state you live in regarding laws regulating the number of dogs allowed in an individual home.
  3. You will need to check with your local law enforcement agency, because the laws vary state to state. Best
  4. It depends on the city and state... I would contact the county or city humane officer and ask if they have certin specifications or laws on how many dogs you can have within your city limits even rural areas sometimes have limits on how many animals you have.... aside from that i have to say good luck I am trying to do the same only a diffrent by trying to take animals out of bad homes train them as much as possible then find them a new home with people who care about them not how cute but their well being so good luck
  5. I agree with the first answer. I don't know where you live, so you'll have to talk to the local council, or maybe some dog-loving people nearby. Good luck.
  6. I know in West Virginia we are allowed to have 10
  7. You need to look into the local laws in your area. Having a bunch of dogs does not constitute "having a kennel", I have 5 dogs and it keeps me busy with feeding/watering, excercising, vet visits/bills, and just plain spending time with all of them besides working, going to school two nights a week and other things that have to be done during the day. Plus starting a kennel will require alot of money, check in your area and see if maybe you could get a part time job at a boarding kennel or animal shelter or with a reputable breeding kennel before committing yourself to anything. Maybe check into fostering a couple of animals from your local rescue shelter to start.
  8. It depends on your intentions, it sounds like you are just wanting that many pet dogs and as long as they are spayed and nuetered most places wont require a kennel license, leaving them intact especially for the purpose of breeding is obviously alot different and would require a kennel license. If they are just for pets then I would highly recomend spay and nueter for obvious reasons.
  9. 2 then get a liecense get a labrador or a husky!!!!!!! or a duck tolling retreiver
  10. well that depends on your state regulations. you can call the dept. of argiculture to find this out. i know in pa if u have 25 or more dogs you need a kennel license and must abide by the guidelines thereof.
  11. It's usually mandated by your city or county. It just depends. I think as long as your dogs are contained and don't pose a threat to others or other's animals (as well as native animals) you should be fine... You need to check with the individual area your moving to.
  12. Each town makes their own rule. Where I live in NH, you are allowed to have 5 before you need a kennel license. Just call your town Clerk.
  13. It depends on where you live. Contact your local animal control office. They should be able to inform you of the law.
