Are Arabian horses safe for tweens to ride?

I'm going to meet some Arabian horse breeders. They are older horses, the youngest is 10. I barely know the people we just met them and they invited us to their ranch. They seemed like nice people and horses. Im not a small child! I have been riding for about 5 years!

  1. Its not so much the horse breed, but the horse itself. If you are riding older horses, they tend to be more laid back. If it is your first time riding, let them know & they will most likely let you ride one that fits your experience. But overall, arabians are sweet (:
  2. If the horse is well trained, there's no reason why you couldn't throw a small child onto their back. But, it depends on the individual horse; it's temperament, personality, and training. There's no real yes or no answer to this question because every horse is different. Edit: I wasn't saying you're a small child. I'm just saying that you could throw just about anybody, even a small child, onto a well trained horse.
  3. arabian are known to have alot of energy, but that is not totally true. its more on how the horse behaves.
  4. breed dont matter
  5. Breed doesnt matter it depends on how to horse is trained.
  6. Depends on the horses & their owners, not the breed. A lot of breeding stock horses haven't had a lot of training or haven't been ridden much since they started their careers as broodmares. This is not always the case though. Some breeding farms do keep their horses in undersaddle work, and some keep other horses for riding. Just depends. If the situation looks unsafe, don't get on. ADD: I put kids & beginners on my Arabian all the time. I have been to Arab circuit shows where 20+ Arabians are packing little kids around a ring. I've also seen Arabians I wouldn't want to be near despite almost 20 years of experience around horses. Same for Quarter Horses, etc.
  7. I'm 13 and at the beginning of my riding lessons, when I was 10, I rode very high-spirited horses because everyone knew I read a TON about riding and had experience with the horses in groundwork. I can't judge your ability to handle an Arabian horse because some girls I ride with have been riding for around 8 years, and they feel confident enough to ride a spirited horse, but once they get on their confidence completely drains and they get scared and the horse senses it, and the horse overpowers them and takes them for a real wild ride. Now, I'm always completely confident in my horse, because I know that in an arena, the horse can't get out, or run away with me. The worst it could do is squish me against the wall, because I know how to ride a buck or rear. And the horse wouldn't smush me because I've had to fling myself off of horses before. I'd say you "test-drive" the horse you want on trails, roads, and in jumping and see how spooky the horse is. It's ALL about the personalities, and if they mix! See about Parelli methods, which I train my horse with. See if you can get the personality horse chart. You can find out about your horse's personality, and yours. If they're opposites (the horse is an Introvert left-brain, you're an extrovert right-brain), that's about the worst it gets. You can always become best friends, though. I'd reccommend doing ALL of the games on ground for a month before even putting a saddle on. Look up more on Parelli.
  8. Of course the breed doesn't make the horse and if the horse is trained there is no reason why not. I am a teen and I own an Arab cross. Yes she is a cross but the vet says she is at least 80% Arab so I consider her an Arab for the most part.
  9. it doesnt depend on the horse it depends on the rider!
  10. breed has nothing to do with anything. training and individual temperment. as for the "nice people"... just because someone comes across as "nice" doesn't mean they won't cheat you. use common sense and a vet check. watch everything: catching, tacking up and riding and then if all looks good, ride the horse yourself and get a vet check if you want to buy. buy a horse like you're buying a used car. be suspicious of everything and ask a lot of questions and watch everything. nice people can be nice, but they can also lie....or not. you don't know. so don't just be totally trusting and listen to your gut
  11. Arabians can be spirited creatures although, most of the time, their energy level completely depends upon the individual horse, and how old it is. I am 15 years old and I own an Arabian and he is extremely easy to handle. So, in anwer to your question, yes, Arabians can be suitable horses for tweens if they are experienced enough and the horse is trained. Good luck!
  12. Arabians can be wonderful horses. My best friend and trainer has an amazing Arabian. However, it is not about the breed,, it is about the individual horse when judging if it is acceptable.
  13. Certain breeders do not put a lot of training into their broodmares. The bigger name breeders (and the good small name breeders) like to "prove" their horses in the show ring before breeding them and therefore they are trained well. There is nothing wrong with a good Arabian horse. You know if you can handle a hot horse, if you don't think you can, just don't get on. Simple as that. I've ridden Arabs since I was 10 years old and I have not turned back. I love them. I've been safe 100% of the time.
  14. It really depends on the personality and temperment of the horse i personally like arabians and are perfectly fine to ride and handle. i hope i helped and i hope you like the horses at the ranch :)
