Why do people think breeding dogs from different breeds is wrong?
I have a boston terrier pug, and ive been reading people's answers on yahoo about cross breeding dogs and how bad it is, things like "people do it for their own selfish reasons" etc etc. How is this wrong? to get a specific breed of dog you have to keep inbreeding it over and over, so if a dog cross breeds with another breed then the puppies will be healthier. Im not talking about a german shepherd and a pug, thats just forceful, im talking about two dogs of the same size that breed naturally, LIKE a boston terrier and a pug. This is why pure bred dogs have so much more health issues then cross breeds, all the inbreeding over so many years. I have a pure bred am staff and she costs me a fortune every month, my boston pug or bugg has puked only 3 times during his 6 years of living. The vet said it simply because he's a cross. So why is it wrong to cross breed dogs that are of the same size and have less health problems? okay i dont know if im uninformed or most of you are. Im guessing most of you are from the states. Average people who breed dogs like two pugs will do it from home and will not care if they are healthy or not. the constant inbreeding with problems is what leads to more problems. UNLESS its a job and they literally spend their time picking and choosing the right pups to breed. Im not talking about forcefully breeding two dogs. please read what i wrote, im talking about two dogs the same size that breed naturally. Maybe a professional wants to start a new breed? how do you think the present breeds were made, by inbreeding the same mutt over and over. My am staff is registered pure bred, thats why we bought her and paid the price. the VETS, not just one vet, many vets we went to with her, said its very common to have purebreds with so many problems. and I do not want to breed my dog! please stop writing that, he's 6 if i wanted to breed him i would by now.

- Just NEUTER your damn MUTT.
- Because the world does not need any more mutts nor pets. Hope I helped.
- well, mix dog breeding can cause many defect in the puppies, possibly fatal, it can also shorten the life span of the dog, and if you attempt to breed that dog with another one oof its kind chanses are you wont get the same thing, so to get another litter of the same kind you would have to have a entirley new generation of that dog, making them useless for breeding purposes, but i dont think people do it sellfishly i think some people just dont know and its not there fauslt and they shouldnt be attacked for it, but if yu want to bread your dogs theres absalutley nothing wrong with it as long as your carefull with the puppies, take them to the vet, and know what your doing.
- Because they're racists.
- no reason i can see to mix them enough dogs now to fill every need you bought from a byb that didn't test dogs is why your purebred costs more in vets over bred crosses usually cost more as untested parents and pet quality breeding
- Ummm...in what delusional world are purebred dogs who have been tested and selected sicker than random mutts that some idiot sticks together?
- Actually mixes have more problems than purebreds, your staffie must be a very poorly bred staff. There's a good chance your dog even isn't purebred unless its registered. Plus there are too many mutts in this world being killed at pounds. And just because its tour dog doesn't mean its the other million pure breds my AKC registered English cocker has very little health problems not even with his ears or eyes:) he was bred from parents with no health problems and has great lines. Like I said your dog probably was very poorly bred and your vet clearly doesn't know anything, he probably promotes the breeding of mixes-_-, I hoped I helped you understand
- Most people think that breeding dogs without specific goals to the breeding program. How can you have a standard or goal when you are breeding two different breeds? You have no ideas what the results will be because the dog will get some genes from one breed and some for another. No responsible breeder would ever breed dogs who were related or who had health problems or bad genes. Many people who are breeding dogs like Labradoodles are just breeding them to sell as pets. If someone wants a pet, then there are many, many pet quality dogs in shelters who NEED homes or pet-quality dogs from serious breeders who for some reason aren't quite suitable for the work they need to do or to be bred. However, serious breeders are breeding to improve that breed, and to produce dogs suitable for work like herding, guarding flocks, police dog work, bomb sniffer, search and rescue, hunting rodents, retrieving, etc. If you are just breeding mixes of dogs then you cannot reliably know what the dog will end up like. Retrievers have the genes to hold things gently, and to LOVE to go and get them and bring them back. Now, I'm not saying that there is *anything* with mixed breed dogs. They do often have less health problems then badly-bred dogs! They can make excellent companions, they can even make excellent working, agility, or obedience dogs!
- Hybrid vigor accounts for many mixes appearing healthier than purebred animals, however mixes have their share of issues as well. It's all down to genetics - if two mixes get together and they both carry the potential for hip dysplasia, the puppies are more likely to develop the condition. It's the same with irresponsible breeding of purebred dogs. Issues develop with irresponsible breeding. A good breeder health-checks all dogs they breed, and ensures that their lines don't inbreed too much. Some inbreeding is necessary to maintain desired traits, but judicious use of line breeding keeps enough of the desired trait without compromising the soundness of the line. Many breeds have multiple gene pools, ensuring genetic diversity within a breed and foreign dogs are often imported to freshen the blood, so to speak. Dogs and litters are registered with a governing body - American Kennel Club, or similar. Purebred dogs also have history behind them - you can look up their great-great-great-great-granddam in their papers. You can see if a line has a history of cancer or hip dysplasia. There is something to be said for provenance. However, so-called designer dogs - cockapoos, labradoodles, etc - tend to be irresponsibly bred by people wishing to make a quick buck out of their back yard and so they are frowned upon. The parents are often not health checked and are either carriers or even afflicted with diseases that they pass on to their puppies. A demand is met with dogs that are of an inferior quality, usually via puppy mill. It is not "wrong" to breed dogs like you mention, however with reputable breeders investing so much time and money into ensuring a healthy breed, fad dogs, or designer dogs, often rankle.
- They call it selfish because you'r being picky. There already tons of dogs and even puppies in the shelter that die everyday because inhumane force a dog to rhape another dog for puppies to sell and if that puppy gets to old they throw them in the shelter eventually no one buys the puppy and the puppy dies when it was just born
- "This is why pure bred dogs have so much more health issues then cross breeds" No they don't, if they are bred by *responsible* breeders who do the appropriate hereditary health-checks. Those dogs are the healthiest of all, and most breeders don't make any profit because they breed for the love and improvement of their chosen breed. The unhealthiest are puppy mill purebreds and "designer" crossbreds, since those dogs are produced with no regard for health or temperament, just bred over and over again to make as big a profit as possible. What is it you think was achieved by crossing the pug with the Boston? I can't think of any reason to do that except those happened to be the two breeds of dogs owned by a person who thought they'd like to have a litter of puppies.... Here are the conditions that could possibly affect YOUR dog and his littermates: http://www.bostonterrierhub.com/boston_terrier_health_problems.html and http://www.pugvillage.com/pug-health/pug-genetic-issues . How many of those are your dog's parents tested clear of? NONE? Well, then don't claim your dog is healthy. He could have any of the conditions from EITHER parent. So he's even more at risk.... BTW, the unhealthiest dog I ever owned was a total Heinz 57, no recognizable breed.
- Mix dog breeding can cause serious birth defeacts or even be fatal. Breeding is a horrible thing, people really dont take into consideration how badly it affects the animals. In most common cases the animals will be forced to breed against their will, kept in horrible conditions like living out their life in a crate and then thrown out to die once the pups are sold. We have enough animals without homes already please please PLEASE dont let your lack of common sense and gain of stupidity add to the enourmous amount of homeless, dying animals around the world. Breeders are only in it for the money contributing to their heartless, selfish ways and have no love or value for animals whatsoever. If you really feel the need to get more puppies then please go to your local shelter and save some lives there or go out into the streets and find some homeless animals there. But from how it sounds, you are clearly irresponsible to even own the dog you have now who knows you will probly throw away this one, too. What a shame
- Very simple, people make money selling things, puppies, food, etc. There is what I hope is a minority that are quick to bash any and all compeitors. Add to them, those that have paid high prices and are insecure about the wisdom of it, and you end up with a cesspool of insults. It would be differerent if the show breeders truely were breeding to improve the breed. After generation after generation, why aren't show dogs overwhelmingly superior to other purebreds. Why is hip dysplacia moving down into smaller breeds instead of disappearing? Allergies, food sensitivity, hot spots, bloat, etc. all continue to exist in show dogs. No, the cup on the mantle and the ever higher prices it brings for puppies is the true priority for show breeders. Facts mean little to many here. On another thread today I was accused of being a BYB. Since I have never done any breeding, there is no evidence to support that accusation. Just because I post unwelcome truths about show breeders, doesn't mean I am a BYB.
- just imagine a island like Britain with strict dog import laws . many of the pedigree dogs in Britain have some sort of defect due to over breeding /line breeding or just BUSINESS . most of the cross breeds or mongrels live a longer and healthier life then pedigree dogs . my cross gsd has outlasted my friends two rotties< back to back dogs > , and still going strong @ 16 yrs old . narrow minded ppl with eugenics at heart are nothing more than the spawn of hitler , encouraging eugenics . watch out eugenics is coming to a country near you soon if they have there way !! NEW world ORDER, IS coming sooner than we think they trying to control your mind already with propaganda
