Cross or mixed breed?!?
Now i know a lot of poeple have strong opinions about this subject and will just reply - its a mutt/mongrel, but i genuinely need an answer. For the sake of a pet insurance application it is asking me to select either: pure, mixed or cross breed. My puppy has a purebred GSD sire and a GSDxNewfoundland dam, now is he cross breed ( as in only has two breeds in him) or mixed breed? Thanks for you help in advance (to those who will not have a rant about him being a mutt!!!)

- He is considered a mix. Having more than one blood line in a parent is considered a mixed animal, having one parent of one breed and one parent of another breed is cross breeding.
- Your puppy would be considered mixed.
- I thought a mutt was a dog that wasn't purebred. Cross breed does seem better since there are only two breeds. I know there will be at least one person who will shoot their mouth off about him being a mutt, but they obviously don't know that nearly every breed we have today were bred from wolves. Come on, you think we would have poodles if we just bred purebred wolves over and over?
- My guess is that cross breed means 2 known breeds and mixed means everything else. Likely the only authoritative answer would come from the insurance company. Thank you for giving him a home.
- Sounds like the insurance carrier has come up with their own definition of the two and I agree that it's likely 'mixed', but I would call them for clarification in case their definition of mixed is that you have no idea of the breeds in the mix
- How difficult! I thought it was either purebred, or not!! I suppose a cross bred would be a cross between two purebred breeds. And a mix would be where more than two breeds are involved, in which case your pup would probably be considered a mix-bred. If there's a phone number, why not phone and ask because insurance companies only need one excuse for not paying up!!! Which is why, for me, I prefer to keep my money in MY account. I know the unexpected can knock you back, but when you consider most pet insurance carries an excess, which, surprise, surprise, often is higher than your basic vet bill, that means you end up paying the vet bill, plus the monthly premium.
- I would say a mix.
- Mixed. A cross-breed is generally a first-generation offspring of two purebred parents, while a mixture may have any combination of multiple breeds, though the terms are used interchangeably.
