how do I get rid of oak leaves and acorns which are bad for my miniature horses?

There are 9 large trees too much to rake and we cannot keep pigs.

  1. rake them up or find a deer hunter who wants to use the acorns for bait and give them to him
  2. Get some pigs in, they eat them. Every year they release pigs into the New Forest so they can eat all the acorns before the ponies can eat them all and get sick. Incidentally the pigs take on a great taste and are good eating.
  3. Hire the larger more industrial version of the garden vacuums that are available.
  4. A powerful leaf vacuum will do it (not one with a mulching/chopping facility) or a sweeper. Failing that try this : http://www.agroforestry.co.uk/nutwizards
  5. A powerful leaf vacuum - you could hire one for the day from your local tool hire company if you didn't want to buy one outright. Otherwise there is a gadget you might want to check out called a nut wizard that picks up all sorts and sizes of nuts including acorns. One of it's other names is acorn picker upper. Have a look at www.nut wizard.co.uk.
  6. put a low voltage stock fence round the trees, this will stop the horses if the fence is outside the trees drop zone
  7. could you introduce mice or rats or squirells into the area. if not then your going to have to do it the old fashioned way and work hard
  8. Remove the trees. Next question?
