1. The Amazon rainforest has an extremely high biodiversity and many species are not yet known to science. Estimations of the number of plant and animal species vary widely. According to a recent publication by the WNF, the Amazon rainforest counts about 40.000 species, 427 mamal species, 1294 bird species, 378 species of reptile, 427 species of amphibians and 3000 species of fish.
