Why do Chinese people eat dogs and cats?

Public Comments

  1. Because they're tasty.
  2. Because it's their culture. It's like us eating cows and pigs. It is illegal to slaughter cows in India, and that's just part of their culture.
  3. its there culture!!! they might find it strange that we eat certain things!!! did you know that guinea pigs where brought to the country (very long time ago) as a source of food, they repopulate so quick that we wouldn't run out in difficult times! they are also a delicacy in peru!!!
  4. "The current Chinese 'grandparent' generation have lived through years of crippling famine at some point in their lives. Now while this didn't extend to absolutely every part of China, it still had a huge impact on people's lives. When you've just got cabbage to eat, suddenly that stray dog starts to look mighty tasty. People had nothing else to eat, so everything became edible (and acceptable). Attitudes to this haven't changed much, though some animal welfare groups are emerging. You can still find dog on menus in China, particularly in parts of Guangdong, and especially in Nanning, the capital of Guangxi province." http://answers.echinacities.com/question/2625 I took that off the net because it explains much more eloquently than I do. Something else to add, cat meat isn't that widely eaten in China. In fact, I didn't really hear much about it until recently when people like you included eating cats in questions. And did you know some parts of South Korea (used to be more, but not so much now) consider dog meat a delicacy? Some cultures/religions think eating pork is disgusting, or eating beef is bad, so views really differ around the world. I would never consider eating animals we keep as pets, but that doesn't make me any more "right" or better. Cheers.
