  3. One of my favourite Romantic landscape artists is Caspar Friedrich. I know his paintings contain people, but they add to the beauty and hidden meanings of the landscapes he painted. The Stages of Life was painted six years before his death. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Caspar_David_Friedrich_013.jpg Landscapes were very important to the Romantics; they were obsessed with the natural world and symbolism was very important. In this painting, the old man is believed to be a self-portrait of Friedrich himself, representing the final stage of life, the young man; maturity, the young woman; youth and the children; childhood. The ships sailing in the distance, again, represent the stages of life and, if you look closely, the ship's staves in the centre of the painting represent the crucifix which symbolise Friedrich's deep faith. It's a painting not about death, but about the fragility and preciousness of life, and how quickly it passes. Although there are people in the painting, the epic landscape sets the melancholy mood and it is unmistakeably beautiful! Another famous landscape artist is the notorious Joseph Mallord William Turner. This painting, Rain Steam and Speed the Great Western Railway is a beautiful landscape. I love the way Turner blended the colours to create a wonderful, hazy image. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Rain_Steam_and_Speed_the_Great_Western_Railway.jpg And finally, Monarch of the Glen by Edwin Henry Landseer. He was a famous animal portraitist. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:LandseerMonarch1851.jpg I hope this has helped you in some way!
