What are Maine Coon cats like?

Are they generally more independent than other cats? Are they snugglers? I think they are beautiful, but I would like to know more about their temperament.

  1. These are very cool cats i had one named Snickers and he was a great companion. He passed away last year. Out of any cats ive ever had he was defentally the most independent. This cat liked his space. They do seem to be in good health but these cats do not have that long of a life spand.
  2. very loving and sweet cats, who like to play around!
  3. Go on youtube and search: cats 101 maine coon. They are awesome and very large cats. My cat is a Maine Coon mix and weighs 18lbs!
  4. they are pretty independent! depends, mine: yes my step-dads: no i have one, SHES GORGEOUS {: GOOD: they rarely get fussy (his, scratch, bite, etc) MOST are very loving BAD: they're shedding is HORRIBLE ;O they like being awake at night rather then the day EHH: they get pretty big, I SUGGEST NOT OWNING ONE IN A TINY APARTMENT. they dont really like to play, I MEAN THE KITTENS DO, but most of the time the cats sleep during the day, at night they like to play though (:
  5. I had one with a lot of Maine Coon in her And Im not sure the rest. She had a hot tortie coat and was both independent but also really snuggly. But at the same time she had one hell of a temper and was a master at playing head games.
  6. First off, I can about guarantee you that 90% of those answering about their "Maine Coon" don't have one. People seem to think that every longhaired tabby cat is Maine Coon or that "mixes" of Maine Coon are common. They're not in the least bit. The only way to get a Maine Coon kitten is from a breeder of Maine Coons. They're not found on the streets or at shelters, either. They START at around $600 and go up from there. Once in a blue moon you may find an adult one at a shelter but in over two decades of volunteering I haven't seen a single one. That being said, with most of these people talking about their DOMESTIC cats - cats of no particular breed - why not just to a shelter and adopt a longhaired domestic? The Maine Coon is a nice breed but no nicer than all the cats looking for homes. Plus do you have the minimum $600 to adopt one then another $300 or so for altering, shots, etc? Go to a shelter and adopt and you'll only spend about a $100 to get a loving, sweet cat with all that already included.
  7. I have a maine coon and she is kind and playful. I will warn you though, if you get one, they need their space! They are quite territorial (or atleast mine is) and maine coons are supposed to be big but mine is puny! we think she was the runt in her litter. But anyway, they are very playful but a tad territorial.
  8. I had one of these cats over 30 years ago before the breed became really popular. He was big and very fluffy and he was a black and white cat. He was not the friendliest cat I've ever had. He was always kind of standoffish but would come up to me and rub against my legs from time to time. He did not live very long, though. When he was about 12 years old, he developed a liver problem and had to be put to sleep. The most interesting thing about him was the he was absolutely not afraid when birds would dive bomb him. He walked very calmly along while thes birds swooped back and forth over his head.
  9. As a Maine Coon Breeder it all depends on how the breeder raises the kittens. Mine are handle from the day they are born and played with often. Some will be a bit shy and there is nothing you can do about it. I always give my info papers on bonding with a new kitten to help that process along and it does help if they do what is written down. They are lovable and snugly the kittens are playful but as they age they will mellow out after the age of 5 yrs old. They need to be combed I do it every other day but daily would be good too. This is a time especially with kittens to bond and a treat after wards. If you get a kitten make sure you handle and play with its toes so you can clip the nails. A breeder will have you sign a contract on the kitten. No out side at all, you have to spay or neuter or it will already be, no de-clawing, regular vet visits and you will not deny the cat medical attention if it becomes sick. That means the first signs of something wrong you will take it to the vet and get it treated, not waiting to see if it will get better. My daughter lives in an apartment and has 2 Maine Coons. Maine Coons are not aggressive, they are laid back. You will have to see the parents and see what their temperament is like that is what the kitten will most likely be like. R P CAT
  10. The boys are way more affectionate. My 23 lb. blue eyed fatso is a giant cuddly teddy bear (he's 15 yrs old). His giant fat sister (also a Maine Coon, and my brother's cat) hates my guts and can barely stand to be in the same room as me. She's really possessive of him, and hates anything that might take his attention away from her.
