do husky sled dogs bury themselves in snow to keep warm?
I'm doing a story about Antarctica and sled dogs. I was wondering if HUSKIES bury themselves in snow to keep warm?

- some do
- No. Their fur coats are thick enough to keep the cold out. They have very dense fine fur among the fur that is seen. This is an insulation layer and the coarser fur/hair is waterproof.
- That's part of it, but basically they rely on their extremely thick coats (and good food!!).
- Huskies, if they're in a snow region, will hollow out a bowl in the snow by walking in circles building up somewhat of a border/rim so to speak then they will curl up in it. Watch any dog and you'll observe this behavior. It is no different with humans in a snow region, they will hollow out a place and curl up in it in their sleeping bag. The snow is a natural insulator and the dogs have a coat designed for this type of weather.
- i work at a sled dog kennel and i haven't seen any of the dogs actively bury themselves in snow. some will dig a bit of a spot, kinda like an indent in the ground and curl up in it. if they've slept there overnight you can see where because the snow melted underneath them and caused and indented ice spot. they'll sleep in that spot again too. any, i have never seen them bury themselves in the snow. but if it's snowing they don't care and may end up completely submerged and you'll come out in the morning and there won't be a single dog in sight until you start getting the food ready. i don't know what time period or how accurately you are making this book, but just so you know animals are no longer allowed in Antarctica due to an international treaty. and just so you know, there is a wide range of huskies. polar huskies are a very extreme breed that is meant for expeditions.
