How can I get cats and dogs go together?

I have a puppy as tall as my knees but we saw a cat that looks cute too. We wanted to buy the cat but were afraid that the dog might attack the cat and shred it into pieces.

1. Why get another pet when you already have one?
2. Cats hold their ground when being attack. I have a dog and she always tries to play with my cats but my cats ignore her or fight back. Eventually they will get used to each other
