what happens to those cats and dogs in animal shelters who never get adopted?

are they put to sleep?

Public Comments

  1. No, they stay in the animal shelters or get moved to other ones
  2. In some cities, yes they are put down. However, certain cities have a no kill rule, but they secretly still do put animals down. BTW: PETA puts more animals down than any other organization.
  3. It's sad but i think they get put to sleep. Or continue to stay at the shelter.
  4. It depends on the shelter. I believe the majority of shelters have to humanely euthanize animals that have not been adopted for a certain length of time (e.g. twelve months). Euthanasia is often the cheapest and easiest way of handling the amount of abandoned pets - it's extremely sad that this happens however there is not much that can be done. If animals weren't euthanized then there would be huge amounts of homeless animals in shelters, so much so that rescues become full, therefore animals end up roaming the streets and succumbing to crueller deaths such as starvation or disease. However, it is important to note that there are a few no-kill shelters out there.
  5. Some shelters do put them to sleep (sadly) and some dont. Also depends on where you live too some dont allow the places to put them down. I dont how many shelters do this, but there are some that do foster programs, this way the animals can be prepared for new homes, and good to do so the shelters arent to full capacity which is a great program.
