How to keep cockroaches out of my home?

My next door neighbors informed me that their apartment has recently become infested with cockroaches (I live in Fort Worth and this is very common and not necessarily a sign of filth). Filth or not, I don't want them to make their way over here. We're moving in less than two months and I know it's possible to bring them with you to a new home. Besides the obvious (keeping my house clean) what can I do to prevent them from coming over here? And if they do make their way over here, what precautions can I take to prevent bringing them with us to our new home? Also, I've got a dog (who's allergic to everything) and a cat. So the less abrasive the better!! thank you!

1. Bait put out under the cabinets will kill roaches if they come your way. Combat gel is good and will kill all kinds of roaches. Some of the bait under something so the animals can not get to them along the baseboards will get the roaches if they come under the baseboards from the neighbors apartment.
