how many years can a thoroughbred horse race?

Public Comments

  1. in the triple crown? 1 as a 3year old in general, depends on the rules of the race
  2. I think 14 is the maximum age here in the USA. FWIW, in a research project I've been working on, I've come across horses that were 11 and 12 years old that started in claiming races this year. The weirdest I came across was a Thoroughbred mare at a track that conducted both Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred races on the same card. This mare, who was 9 years old, started and finished out of the money in the second race on the card. Her son, who was sired by a Quarter Horse stallion, won a Quarter Horse race three races later! Very unusual for a mare to have a foal and then return to the races, but this was a really small racetrack. In the claiming ranks, it isn't unusual to find horses that are 7 or 8 or 9 years old. 10 and older is unusual.
  3. About 10... but most only race for 2 or 3 years. There's no real limit on how long a horse can race. But at some point, it becomes difficult for a horse to compete against much younger horses. There's a difference between a horse with a lot of experience and one who's just old. An older horse can have all the talent in the world, but if it's running against horses that are more than half its age, it's tough. So horses usually retire by their 5 year old season and it's really rare to see 9 or 10 year old horses who can compete successfully.
  4. Most horses start training when they are a year old and are done racing when they are 4 or 5.
