What age do horses retire?

What age do horses retire ? I dont mean race horses I mean normal horses like a schools horse if he was 17 how much longer could he be ridden for

  2. It really depends on the horse. I've known horses who've retired at 21 and ones that have retired at 32! I think if you see that he's getting a little sore from riding a lot (and getting bad arthritis and stuff) that you should go to your vet and ask for their recommendation. Always ask them, because you don't want to cause your horse unnecessary pain by over riding him when he's too old. (:
  3. it really depends on the horse. some horses retire early, others like mine, are still full of it at 27. a 17 year old should have a few good years left on him. depending on what kind of work hes doing, what kind of work hes done in the past, and how well he's been taken care of.
