Why is it legal to eat cow/sheep/lamb but illegal to eat dogs/cats?

Dogs, cats - you're good, pampered animals and people shouldn't eat you Cows, sheep, lamb - there is a loophole which allows people to eat you guys with impunity Isn't this an unfair law? I can't eat a dog or a cat, but people eat cows and sheep? Why? Why can't I have a farm with dogs and slaughter them to eat them, but I can do it with cows? Are cows more precious? -Proud Liberal :)
