What are some really cool adaptations that animals have made to their environment?

In science we're working on evolution and adaptations and stuff like that. I'm making a list of the top ten craziest, kookiest, weirdest, or funniest adaptations that animals have. Just put whatever adaptation you think is neat or interesting please! :] Thanks

  1. The bee orchid is a flower that looks like a bee, so other bees will pollinate it. The Jesus lizard can run on water to evade it's predators. The Archer Fish shoots pellets of water at it's prey to knock them into the water and stun them. The Water Spider makes air pockets and lives it's entire life underwater.
  2. Polar bears have hollow hair, so they can trap more heat. Female carribo grow antlers, the only female member of the deer family to do so. They grow their antlers late in the season, after giving birth to their calves. The females keep their antlers all winter, unlike the males which shead them in November. This give them an advantage over the males for feeding spots in the winter. Some crickets can freze solid, and come back to life after they thaw out. Sharks found near Greenland have a type of anitfreeze in their blood which makes them toxic for humans to eat....unless you let them rot for months....then they are concidered to be a wonderful meal. Seahorses...of course the male is the one "pregnant" with the eggs/young. Aye-Aye have one very long, very special finger just so they can scoop food out of certain fruits. Female hyena's have a mock penis, because of the way their dominance works, with the females actually being in charge of the packs. Some crocodiles in Africa have learned to live FAR underground, in caves, in the middle of a desert...they only come out once a year, when the floods come, the rest of the year they can actually live underground! For many reptiles, the sex of their offspring is determined by temperature, and not sex chromosomes. Several types of frogs have learned to live in deserts. The come out of the ground during the rainstorms, breed quickly, feed a bit, and just as quickly re-burry themselves into mud and spit cocoons where they can live for several years! Chameleons can move their eyes in two different dirrections. Male Emperor penguins stay and hatch the egg during the long arctic winter nights, never eating the entire time...they loose about 25 pounds! Marsupial births, are of course a wonder of nature. Playtpus ducks are mamals that lay eggs. They also have a toxic spur. Woodpeckers have special cushioning in their brains, so they can hammer away with their bills, and not end up brain-dead. Albatross can sleep while they fly. Electric eel anyone? Tigers have striped skin, not just striped fur. The world smallest mammal is the bumblebee bat. They weigh less than a penny (terribly cute!). Poison arrow frogs? Kiwi birds lay TITANIC sized eggs, compaired to their body size. I've given you way more than 10 adaptations...I could keep going but I think I'll stop there! ~Garnet Homesteading/Farming ove 20 years Active studdy of wildlife over 40 years.
