What results have you had with heart worm treatment for small dogs? Is the cost worth it, or a lost cause?

We have been told that small dogs who have heart worm normally die shortly after treatment and with the cost of $600 for the initial treatment, is it worth it, or are we just wasting time and money for the inevitable? We have only had the dog for 1 1/2 years and she is blind and deaf when we adopted her as her owner couldn't take care of her. Also can this be transmitted to other pets in the house?

  1. Allot of it depends on the general health of the dog. The treatment is harsh, stressful and can cause other problems. Discuss it with your vet, in a healthy dog then yes it is worth it.
  2. is a 30lb whippet a small dog? because I know of one that not only survived treatment but continued as a field trial winner after..... as for other pets - it is almost always carried by a a mosquito NOT directly so well if the 'skeeter bites two dogs in your house, but it could come as easily from a neighbor (or to a neighbor)
