What animals has America hunted down to the point the animal is On the Endangered list?

I'm sitting here listening to my mother Put down the Japanese people because they are Killing whale. She's Basically implying that American people have never hunted any animal int o the Endangered list or wiped off a animal off the face of the earth. I'm sure there has been endangered animals killed by Americans and popular ones at that..

  2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_endangered_species_in_North_America \ There is a partial list on that site of the animals endangered in north america, many of those are from the u.s.
  3. Some of these were before the Endangered Species Act was created, so technically not "endangered", but...Bison, passenger pigeon, wild turkey (eastern U.S., early 20th century), whitetail deer (eastern U.S., early 20th century), black bear (eastern U.S., 20th century) red wolf, gray wolf, most fish in your local supermarket, grizzly bear (populations south of Canada), mountain lion (eastern U.S.), great auk (not in U.S., but hunted by us), most species of rattlesnake, eastern fox snake, beaver. The predators and snakes generally weren't hunted for food, but hunted and persecuted they were/are, and some experienced local decimation and recovered rather quickly (beaver).
  4. Americans hunted bison till it was on the endangered list (in the 1800s).
  5. lets not forget DA EAGLE
  6. Probably our worst foul-up was the killing off of the passenger pigeon. Flocks used to be miles in extent and so many would settle on tree limbs that the limbs would break off. Market hunters killed so many, the passenger pigeon became extinct in the early 20th century. Cutting down the old-growth forests to create farmland didn't help any, either. One of the highlights of my time as a graduate student was discovering a stuffed passenger pigeon among the birds in the school collection when I was asked to sort through the collection. Supposedly, two faculty member had pulled out all the passenger pigeons and Carolina parakeets to put in the vault before I was given my task.
