What are Sweepstakes (for Arabian horses)?

I am in the process of purchasing a purebred Arabian colt. I want to show him in halter. What does it mean for him to be nominated for Silver Sire, Sweepstakes, Futurities, etc.? Do these still apply if he is gelded? I need DETAILED information about why a horse us nominated for these programs, what they mean, and what they do. Thanks in advance!

1. ive never heard of silver sire. but if your horse is sweepstakes, then if the class is sweepstakes they get money, its not much. but sometimes it can cover the cost of the class. and futurities just means its a futurity horse (under the age of 5). alot of shows will offer more money in futurity classes. and none of that will be affected if you geld him. but these shows are not a way to make money. alot of people lose money when they think horses are a good investment, it should just be for fun or a hobby.
