What are the mixed breeds that are not recognized but accepted?
Based on Erica's question about mixed breeds for a purpose? What are they? And what are they used for? This is an appropriate dog-related question and is not ranting or chatting. THANK YOU. Ok. I think "Cur" dogs is a better term for these dogs than "mixed breeds" so people don't auto-assume I'm talking about hybrid mutts. LOL Julai - I know A LOT of people who think pure breds are too fancy. LOL (red necks). PS I'm in the south.

- There are a lot of working curs in the South-they don't really have a strict standard, just fit a general look and serve their purpose well. A friend of mine who used to do rescue down there said that purebreds were considered too prissy or something. Then again, could be the area.
- as far as im concerned, anything that is not a recognized pure breed is a mutt. to name a few, doodles, cockapoo, shihpoos, malepoos, labradoodles, woodles, schnoodles. all these dogs are mutts.
- First one that comes to mind that I actually know something about is the Catahoula Bulldog - Cross of the Lousiana Catahoula Leopard dog and the American Bulldog. Reason to create a all purpose herding and hog catching dog as well as dog suitable for hunting Black bear. Don't know if they are still being used to hunt black bear, but I do know they are still being utilized for hunting/herding
- a couple that spring to mind are Alaskan husky, and lurcher's and euro hounds.
- Best example I know of is service dogs. The labradoodle was originally bred for guide work for people with allergies. Conran, the guy who created them, wishes he hasn't - see link below. We sometimes breed labs and goldens for guide work to get the best of both breeds, but they comprise a very small percent of our kennel population. Have never tried the labradoodle - we don't have enough breeding history with poodles for the experiment. ------------- Marna, you misunderstand the intent of cross-breeding for service animals. There are plenty of 'good enough' labs and GR's - actually, plenty of excellent ones. But we want better and better guide dogs, not just 'good enough'. GR's are fabulously affectionate and stubborn, but many have that distraction for blowing leaves, etc., and unsoundness that eliminates them from guidework. Crossing with labs brings attempts to balance it out. Haven't found the magic cross yet though. Labs are still #1 for us.
- Lurchers are one but I don't know much about them. Mal/Shepherd mixes are sometimes found in Police work. I know there are other, just can't think of any more. ----- Mixed breed/ cross breed - same thing. It is not purebred and still accepted which is exactly what the person was asking. They are accepted because they serve a purpose.
- All dogs, including purebreds, were mutts at some time in their development, but those that formed clubs supporting their "mutts" and establishing standards for breeding became the purebred dogs we have today. Only time will tell whether or not the "designer" breeds will ever become a recognized breed, and until then anyone really interested in developing them for anything other than money should be forming a breed club and setting standards to breed by. For those that aren't doing this, they are simply in it for the money.
- NONE. Lurchers are not "mixed breeds".....they are crossbreds;made on purpose FOR a purpose. The ONLY one that is;been done for a couple of hundred years-to HUNT!.SILENTLY,by sight...often atnight=lamping...& return rabbit to hand alive *&* as bolt-stoppers &draw-dogs,when out w/terriers. The classic cross is G-hound/collie.Other sighthounds are used...whippet X Beddy being well know. Sighthound X sighthound are "long-dogs",not lurchers. & yes, there ARE extremely well respected lurcher breeders. A friend has imported hers from the same man for decades. YES,I've been out w/lurchers. No,"mixed" &"cross"are NOT the same, dear.
- none they are all friggin MUTTS!
- The one, and probably the only one, that comes immediately to mind is the Labradoodle which was originally produced to supposedly be safe for people with allergies. Sadly experience has confirmed that this was never going to be the case. There have been other mixes done, eg. in some hound packs to enhance certain qualities like bringing Bassets more up on the leg/shorten their ears, so they were more able to run a plough in a pack, than for their original use as a flushing dog, worked in pairs, not in packs. Then of course, again with the Basset, there was need, after the War, when the gene pool in the UK became very limited, when they were bred to Bloodhounds. This outcrossing was accepted at the time, out of necessity. For me, the mix breeding that's going on today is a very different matter - being done only for money, under the guise of persuading the gullible that these mutts will be healthier, which is very far from the truth. There's nothing wrong with mongrels, mutts, whatever, but to deliberately cross two breeds to produce a mutt ...... no way. ps Spellcheck doesn't even 'accept' Labradoodle LOL
- Accepted for what? Most are not bred for specific purposes. Sure you have the "hypoallergenic dogs" and the "designer breeds". The hypoallergenic dog are not 100% hypo allergenic anyway. There are purebred dogs that are hypo allergenic so why try to create so many other mixed breeds...because people want different looks and sizes of dogs that's why. Same with the designer dogs...people just want dogs that have a different look. You can buy many purebred dogs cheaper than mutts now days. Now there are some mutts created for specific working reasons Lurchers, for example. Collie crosses have always been very popular, given the working instinct of the sheepdog when mated with a sighthound gives a dog of great intelligence plus speed - prerequisites for the hunter/poacher. There have been many registries created for mutts and they will accept any mixed breed of dog.
- I have heard of varying hunting mixes..mostly for boar. The most "accepted" are the Lab/Golden crosses service organizations are consistently cross breeding. Kinda a shame they don't feel there are good enough Labs or good enough Goldens without the need to cross.
