At what age can an English Bulldog have puppies?
What age can an English Bulldog start having puppies? How many litters can they have, and what age would be considered too old to have puppies? My bulldog is 4 years old.. Please No Negative Responses. I am just trying to learn more about the breeding process, and I DO REALIZE the importance of knowing each and every step as well as the rarity of my little dog.

- CAN and SHOULD are two different things. They CAN get pregnant as early as 5 to 6 months old. You SHOULD NOT even consider breeding until 2 years old and after she has passed all health and genetic testing. (OFA, BAER, CERF, etc.)
- 4 years old would start to be on the older side. Generally it isn't recommended for a female to have more 2 or 3 litters in her lifetime- more than one litter every other year or so is too often. She should also be health checked by a vet to make sure she is a good candidate for breeding as well as testing for any genetic/inherited diseases that bulldogs can be prone to such as brachycephalic syndrome.
- You should not breed your dog because you don't know any of this information and obviously aren't a legitimate breeder. Also English Bulldogs are one of the hardest and more expensive dogs to breed because they are known for having so many complications, can usually never do it on their own, and usually have to have c-sections. They can be bred at 6 months, though you should wait until the dog is fully mature and has all of it's health clearances at about 3 years old. They could have a litter with every heat cycle, but they should have no more than 4 litters in a lifespan, maximum. They could have litters until a ripe, old age, but they should be stopped after no more than 8 years old. Please, don't breed your dog. Have is spayed and adopt another if you really want one.
- 2 years old would seem a good age . so your dog is pretty much a good age to have a litter the average is about 5 puppies but they can have up to a whopping 12 they can only have 1 litter per year too and i wud say 3 litters in her life time would be a limit and the The KC won't register a litter born to a b*tch older than seven years of age but some breaders will bread to 8 . i hope this helped
- Well, as you don't seem to know your dogs own breed..... Just bulldog, not english. And bulldogs are common as muck.
- 4 is TOO OLD to start breeding.. many REPUTABLE breeders are lucky to get ONE litter out of their bulldogs.. they are difficult to get pregnant, and have difficulties with whelping. Spay your dog, leave breeding to the professionals.
- The most important thing to know about breeding Bulldogs is the fact that you must assume they will need a very expensive C-section.
- You really need to talk to your vet about this. If you read this article for bulldog breeders, you will see that it is *terribly* expensive and dangerous for the male and female. This article answers all of your questions: http://www.dailypuppy.com/articles/english-bulldog-breeding-tips/9ef16225-91e1-74eb-b8ac-874d20630bf9 Also, ask your vet how much a planned C-section costs for a bulldog. Here, it runs a little over $2,000, but some places are higher. You would want to have that amount available before you consider breeding. If you don't schedule a 'planned' C-section, then you will get stuck with having to pay for an emergency C-section, and they run at least $3,000
