Cross Breeds

what are your views on selling animals (mostly cats and dogs) in pet shops?

i personally think it's disgusting . Today i went to the pet store and these poor creatures were locked up in tiny cages.

Public Comments

  1. better than putting them down
  2. I think it´s cruel but then again I think less of the shallow buyer who thinks of them as more of an accessory than a life with feelings, emotion and love.
  3. I'm fine with small animals such as birds and reptiles but dogs and cats is not right. They require much more work and space then other animals. Most dogs and cats being sold are from poor quality breeders or mills. Adopting dogs and cats out at pet stores is perfectly fine by me.
  4. It's not good for many reasons inside the pet shop and out: 1) the pups are ALWAYS from puppy mills (puppy mills are BADDD, really, really, bad), don't let them tell you otherwise they are lying. (what respectable breeder would sell their pups to a pet shop? they would make tons more money selling them on their own) 2) pet shops never take them out of that small glass cage. that's right, never. (i worked for a pet shop and quit after I found out all these horrible things) 3) People buy the puppies on an impulse thinking "OH IT'S SO CUTE" 5 seconds after bringing it home: "IT CRAPPED IN THE HOUSE! GROOOOOOOOOSS!" "IT CHEWED UP MY STUFFED ANIMAL" "I HAVE TO PAY $50 FOR PUPPY SHOTS??? YEARLY CHECKUPS?!?" and pretty soon it just ends up: "I can't handle this, let's take it to the pound." that my friend who said at least their not being put down is why it usually ends up the same way anyways. 4) when people do keep them they are severely inbred leading to psychological damage and neurotic behavior. Pet shops are not cool. Puppies are cute, but a hole lotta responsibility. hope this helped, Tara
  5. I also think it's cruel thy their in cages. Animals should be in a loving home. They usualy have outragous prices to and that's stopping most people from buying them. They should be free no matter if there in a store
  6. Unnecessary. There are so many pet shelters that have animals that desperately need an owner, and they are free or cheaper. All my cats have been adopted, not bought.
  7. I think there needs to be laws on it, that any dogs or cats can only be in teh cages during shop hours but when the store closes the animals must be taken home to an enclosure somewhere with more room. I think petshops should only be able to sell dogs with the help of local animal shelters or licensed breeders to prevent puppy mill puppies. Any breeder that doesnt allow open tours of their breeding facilities shouldnt be allowed to sell their animals in petstores. And local only, no shipping animals from other states or that crap. All animals should be locally bred to prevent the trauma and danger of shipping live animals.
  8. Its tricky, I live in a small, small town so the puppies and kittens from our pet store are all from town or near by, when someone's cat has kittens they bring them to the pet store, when someones dog has puppies they usually get $5 for each puppy unless its breed specific then the store owners and the puppy owners work out a deal. City pet stores are a different story mostly. There are a few people who still take kittens in to pet stores to find good homes. I think, for a first time owner a pet store is amazing, however first time buyers are becoming less and less educated and do less and less homework on the pet they want. There is also no way of really telling where the puppies and kittens are coming from. Not all pet stores deal with puppy mills, a lot do but not all. But how do you find out for sure? Thats usually why you pay more when you buy through a breeder. I would like to see pet stores and shelters combined, so you have the small animals like rodents and fish and birds, along with all the things you need for your pet, but having the adoptions from the shelter, so not just puppies and kittens but older dogs and cats as well. Or have breeders become more easily available, it can be very hard for a first time pet owner, even experienced owners to find, communicate, travel to and buy off breeders.
