Are horses over 3 years old not able to race in horse racing and has a female horse ever won the triple crown?
I was looking at the Kentucky Derby web site and it says it is for 3 year old horses. Are horses over 3 unable to race in thoroughbread horse racing? My second question is has a female horse ever won the triple crown of racing (Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont)? I didn't see one listed just thought I would ask.

- Yes, horses over three years old are allowed to race, and do. The Triple Crown is only for three year olds. No, they have not.
- Most races with Derby in the name are for 3-year-olds, with some exceptions. If it says Futurity, it's 2-year-olds. No filly has won the three races in the Triple Crown that most people know about, but there's a Triple Crown for fillies (Oaks, Acorn, Mother Goose) and also a Triple Crown for another group. It slipped away as I started typing, but I think it's for handicap horses, or races where the weights assigned are based on the entries' prior performances. In the Triple Crown and Triple Crown for fillies races, the weights are based on age and sex. Fillies can run in the regular Triple Crown races, but colts and geldings can't run in the Triple Crown for fillies races.
- Correct...The Kentucky Derby is a Grade I stakes race for three-year-old Thoroughbred horses ONLY, held annually in Louisville, Kentucky, United States on every first Saturday in May. And, None. Three have won the Derby, four took the Preakness, and two at the Belmont. However, the closest was Filly 'Genuine Risk', who won the Derby and finished second in both the Preakness and the Belmont. :) :)
- The three Triple Crown races, the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes, are restricted to three-year-old Thoroughbreds, but Thoroughbreds can race through age 14 in the United States, and there are a number of notable racehorses, like John Henry, Lava Man, and Kelso, who have raced until they were 7 or 8. The Kentucky Derby has been won by female horses (fillies) 3 times: by Regret in 1915; by Genuine Risk in 1980; and by Winning Colors in 1988. The Preakness has been won by fillies 5 times: by Flocarline in 1903; by Whimsical in 1906; by Rhine Maiden in 1915; by Nellie Morse in 1924; and by Rachel Alexandra last year, 2009. The Belmont has been won by fillies times: by Ruthless in 1867, Tanya in 1905, and Rags to Riches in 2007. The closest a SINGLE filly has come to sweeping the Triple Crown was when Genuine Risk won the Derby and then finished second in both the Preakness and the Belmont. In England, the Classic races are the Epsom Derby, the Epsom Oaks (fillies), the 1,000 Guineas (fillies), 2,000 Guineas (colts and fillies), and the St. Leger Stakes. The British Triple Crown is considered to be the 2,000 Guineas, the Derby and the St. Leger. In 1902, the great, fabulous filly Sceptre came close to sweeping every single Classic race in Britain. She won the 2,000 Guineas, beating colts, and just two days later won the 1,000 Guineas against fillies. She finished 4th in the Derby against colts with a bruised foot, and Oaks, and then two days later beat fillies in the Oaks. In August, she won the St. Leger against colts. She won 4 of the 5 Classic races for 3-year-olds. That's pretty incredible and I doubt if any filly will ever again come close.
- i do not think a female won,,you would of seen it there for the triple crown,,,but it is for 3 year old horse only none younger or older
- Yes horses over 3 years old can and do race. The Santa Anita Handicap for instance is only for 4 year olds and older. And no a filly has never won the TC as of yet. Fillies kinda have their own Triple Crown, its called the Triple Tiara, though its not as well known. It consists of the Acorn Stakes, Coaching Club American Oaks, and Alabama Stakes. Not sure about the exact order. Hopefully we will see another TC winner, and more interestingly a female TC winner!
