Which is worth more, a cat or the loves of your life?

Almost 16 years ago, I picked my 14 year-old daughter up at a friend's house, and she walked up to me with a tiny little kitten that she had found wandering the streets. She asked if she could keep her, and after a brief moment of pause, I told her to to get into the car with her before I changed my mind. It also was with the understanding that she would take Jasmine with her when she left home. Almost 16 years later, I have two wonderful grandchildren who are allergic to cats, an awesome boyfriend of three years who is also allergic to cats, and my healthy-as-a-horse roomie, Jasmine, who is making things difficult for all concerned. None of them can come over unless they are on medication, and Jasmine is spending a lot of time alone because of it. She also requires a homemade diet at this point in her life, so my few attempts to find her another home haven't been successful. At what point do I weigh the quality of life for her and myself? Are there any cat lovers out there in the Cleveland, Ohio area who would welcome a loud mouthed, tiny little tortoiseshell kittie into their home? I feel like I am just waiting for her to die, and that is no way for either of us to live. How would you handle it?

  1. IMO, a pet is like a child. You would not give your child up because you had to put her on a special diet or because other people were allergic. So what, they have to take medicine. It's not the cat's fault that the children were born allergic. Don't make the cat get a new home when it has lived with you it's whole life. Would you like to be confused and feel betrayed in your last years of life? When that cat got in the car with you, you made an agreement to take this cat in for life. I do think your daughter should take the cat though since it was her idea.
  2. You have had this cat for the cats whole life, and it is like your child now! I know I would never give up my cat or dog... they can take medicine if they have to, it isn't that hard to swallow a pill! If it were me maybe I would give the cat a room to herself, make it really comfy and visit her a lot in there, but when people come over they don't have to go in that room, thus not being a problem.
