How did animals gain the ability to move and which specific cell characteristics made it possible?

During evolution, all living organisms eventually divided into 2 kingdoms: plants and animals. How did that come about? Why is it that (most) animals are able to move and (most) plants are not?

  1. Well you're wrong about the kingdoms for a start. There are far more than just animals and plants. The major ones are:- Animals Plants Fungi Archaea Eubacteria Protista The ability to move does not define the difference between a plant and an animal. Ferns and Mosses have a swimming "sperm-like" male equivalent of pollen which is highly motile and many single-celled plants are propelled by cillia. Movement is achieved by contractile proteins. Within an individual cell are threads of protein which criss-cross the cell - when these contract and relax movement achieved. On a larger scale, these contactile proteins make up the majority of the contents of muscle cells.
