English bulldog puppy stained yellow from afterbirth time it will come clean?

We just had 6 baby english bulldogs and a couple are pure white but one of them is stained yellow from afterbirth I think and we can't get it to come clean. How long will it be like this? Also how can I get the female to stimulate puppies to potty? She will feed them but doesn't want to be around them other than that.

  1. Yes, you should leave the pups alone and let mama do her thing. She'll take care of things on her own, all you have to do is observe (from a distance, I recommend) and let nature take it's course. The only time you would have to intercede would be if she doesn't (or can't) feed the pups.
  2. The yellow should eventually wear off. Keep an eye on mum, she might be stimulating them herself. If not get a damp cloth like a baby wipe and rub up and down on the bum and private parts until the puppy defecates and urinates. Get them checked out by the vet!
  3. You can speak to the vet when you take them all in for a checkup and to have the pups dewclaws removed, you have made an appointment for today? In the meantime, you can call your breed mentor. I'm sure that they are anxious to hear about the pups.
  4. The staining should clear - I've had a green one before, but mum licked it, as usual, and gradually it cleared. Don't be tempted to do anything at this point, if they have only just been born. Did she have them without a C.Section? If she had a Section, and they are only hours, or maybe just a few days old, she'll still be pretty groggy, and the best you can really hope for is for her to allow them to suckle. Eventually once she's more herself, nature should kick in and once she smells they need to eliminate, she will know to clean them up. I would say I had one b itch, a right madam, who would 'pee' her puppies, but totally refused to have anything to do with their poohs. It was all way too much for her and how those puppies managed - I wasn't very good at doing it either and spent hours sitting in the whelping box trying to get them to go - I'll never know. It was more to do with gravity, but they did survive!! Just watch quietly, and leave her to pick up and get going with her maternal duties. Do you have a mentor, or somebody who has experience with whelping puppies you can call on? Perhaps the breeder of your b itch would be the ideal person to help you, with her knowledge of the breed specifically. One good tip - if the puppies are quiet there's no need to worry. If things are not right, you'll pretty soon know as the puppies will be noisy. Have you had them, and mum, in to see the vet - they need to go unless of course, mum did have a C.Section. If she did, any time you are worried, phone your vet for advice. Add - thinking further, if the staining is from 'afterbirth', I assume these puppies were born naturally. In which case yes, she does need to go into be given a shot to clear her out, and for the puppies to be checked over for any defects. Dewclaws should be done at day 2/3, not immediately (my experience, but take your vet's advice on that one).
