Can cats and dogs live in the same home peacefully?

I have a full grown German Shepherd that I've had for a while. He's extremely well behaved and very gentle (I've never even heard him bark!). I really really want a cat, though. Is it possible to have a cat AND a dog? And if so, any advice? Thanks! :)

  1. I have a five year old rat terrier, and I use to have a small kitten. They got along so well it was crazy, They slept together and sometimes he even cleaned her! He accepted her like she was his baby, it was insaaaane. Give it a shot, and just make sure you watch them closely. Good luck!
  2. Can liberals and conservatives live in the house together?
  3. Of course it's possible. The bad thing is that the two didn't grow up together so getting the two to get along may be a tiny bit difficult.
  4. yes its possible asometimes there ol time best buds so yeah gimme a thumbs up on this cuz its true
  5. Usually, they will only get along if they have been together since a young age. It is possible, but it may be hard to introduce a new animal to a place where your dog has been the only one there. I have introduced a new dog to cats and it took sometime for them to get used to each other but now they play and accept each other. Keep in mind though, you are talking about a small cat and a big German Shepherd where the dog I introduced was just a little mixed chihuahua. If you do decide to get a cat, then take these tips. Allow them to interact with one another but at any sign of violence, keep them separated. It will take sometime for them to get used to each other. It will be even harder for the cat, because it is in a whole new surrounding. It may be wise to keep them separated while nobody is around to watch them until they get used to each other. You wouldn't want to come home to a bloody mess.
  6. I have a 13 year old cat and a 4 month old Pomeranian and they love eachother, my cat always has to be around my pomeranian and likes to see what he is doing at all times. In saying that my cat has always grown up with dogs (little dogs) not big ones, My boyfriends mums dog came over for a visit and he has never grown up or been around cats and when he saw my cat he went syco, so I guess it's just a matter of introducing your dog to cats when they're young.
  7. Depends on the dog/cat, but normally; Yes. We have a cat and an APBT and they are the best of friends. When we moved in the cat was already here, and they hit it off right away. The cat seems to think she is a dog. She sleeps with him, plays with him & his toys, tries to sneak food from his dish, she even goes outside with him to go pee! In fact, I was thinking of getting her a harness and lead so we can take her with us on walks. Probably not the best idea though. Haha Anyways, yes.
  8. It is totally possible. I have cats and a long haired Chihuahua and they love each other. They eat together, play chase (super cute) and sleep curled up together at the foot of my bed. My advice would be to get a dog that doesn't tower over the cat and just give them some time to get aquainted. My cat actually hissed at the puppy the first day, but after a few days she got more curious. Now they are the best of friends. Don't push them on each other ust let them take it at their own pace.
  9. Its definitely possible. I have had many dogs and cats in my life, almost always at the same time. In my household it has always been easier to introduce cats to larger dogs rather than small dogs. Probably because so many of the small dogs out there, no matter how well behaved, are nervous, fussy, rodent killers (or bred to be anyways). It is much easier doing introductions when they are both young, but as long as you keep them in your sight at all times for the first couple weeks, and dont let them play at all during that time (only sniffing allowed), than I think it should be ok. Sometimes they become great friends, other times they just tolerate each other. Either way is acceptable. Good luck.
