Has anyone heard of Seattle Slew?

Has anyone heard of Seattle Slew the famous race horse? He has won 3 Kentucky Derby's. If you have I have met 2 of his Grandchildren. One was nick named Player. His show name is Play the Best. And the other was nick named Missy and her show name was named Miss Prissy Slew. They were both found at a rescue in Washington. Missy was put to sleep about a year ago because her legs were giving her problems. and Player was adopted by his best friend. And as far as i know doing well. Before going to rescue Player was trained to early and now has a sway back. I am not to sure about Missy but she was meant for breeding purposes. Really i just wanted to know if anyone knows who Seattle Slew was.

  1. Yes, I knew of her.
  2. Of course. Seattle Slew is famous, you know. However, being a grandchild of him really isn't spectacular at all, just as it isn't something to be a great grandchild of Native Dancer. Great stallions were bred to so much they had a TON of offspring, and therefore a TON of grandchildren. It makes people feel good to be able to say "Well, MY horse is a grandchild of the great Secretariat!" but really it's like yeah, him and about 500 other animals of approximately the same age group.
  3. Everyone has heard of Seattle Slew and there are a boatload of his grand-get out there. I'm confused, is this a question or are you bragging? No offense, that's just how this came across because it's pretty random. A friend of mine purchased a mare that goes back to Secretariat (for $200). Does that make her famous?
  4. Yes, does that satisfy your curiosity!
  5. A lot of people know who Seattle Slew is. A lot of people know of Secretariat, Man O' War, Seabiscuit, Eight Belles, Barbaro, and Pharlap too.
  6. Everybody has. Everybody has also met a grandchild of a famous horse. In fact, half of all horse owners have owned a horse going back to a famous horse. I have a great grandchild of Jet Deck (much older legendary racehorse), and a great, great grandchild of Jet Deck. Most registered horses go back to some well-known horse, whether it be a legendary race horse, or one of the top horses in AQHA western pleasure standings.
  7. Sure..........several MILLIONS have, dear. & he did NOT win 3 Derbies! No horse has!
  8. Yes. Most people (especially horse people) have heard of Seatle Slew and many of the other famous horses out there. Also, famous stallions like Seattle Slew have sired many, many children, and those children have also had a lot of children, and so on. His name is in a huge number of thoroughbred pedigrees. That appaloosa filly with the bad attitude that I talk about sometimes is related to Seattle Slew. She is also the 4th great granddaughter of Man O War and the great great grandaughter of Zippo Pine Bar. It sounds cool and all, but if you know how many foals horses like Man O War, Seattle Slew, and Zippo Pine Bar has sired, it's not quite that impressive anymore. Here is a list of all the children Seattle Slew has entered in this database: http://www.pedigreequery.com/progeny/seattle+slew He sired about 1000 foals, and those aren't even all of his children, because this database isn't maintained by the jockey club, so not all of the registered thoroughbreds out there are entered here. If you go down the list and click on names, you'll see how many children each of those horses has on this database. The first five horses had 26 foals. If you average that and assume every horse had about 5 foals, that leaves us with an estimate of about 5,000 Seattle Slew grandchildren in this database. That's a lot of grandkids! And by now, Seattle Slew has a growing number of great grandchildren and great great grandchildren and so on... Also, if you look on dreamhorse.com, there are over 100 horses with Seattle Slew pedigrees for sale. Many of them aren't even thoroughbreds, so you have to imagine how many more grandchildren he has than just the ones listed on the thoroughbred database. I hate to burst your bubble but meeting a descendant of a famous horse isn't something to brag about, as most horses are descended from someone famous.
  9. Of course we have heard of Seattle Slew, most of America and the rest of the world has heard of him. He won the triple crown. However, he did NOT win the Kentucky Derby three times. The derby is only run by horses that are 2 years old. The derby can only be run once in a horse's life time. To say that you have grandsons of Seattle Slew is not saying much. Now if he was a direct son of Seattle Slew that might be a little more impressive. Seattle Slew was a very famous horse and he was bred a lot. There are lots and lots and lots of grandchildren of Seattle Slew and every other triple crown winner.
  10. seattle slew was indeed famous he won the triple crown. but he only won the kentucky derby once. a horse can't enter the race more than once
  11. I am astounded by the amount of mis-information there is out there about the Derby. Brittani Banana....The Derby is for 3 year olds only.
