How can I get my other horses when I play Red Dead Redeption?

Every time I break a horse, it ends up being a slow horse. I've heard that the Kentucky Saddler (golden Horse) is the best. And that's the one that Bonnie gives you when you start to break other horses. When my mom plays she says you have to kill them to get your other horse. So, she takes them out to a lonely feild, gets off the horse, wistles, and then shoots the horse in the neck. Please tell her she's wrong and you can get the horses another way.
