extinct animals that are related to present day animals?
for part of a bio project i need to find an extinct animal somehow related to an animal living now. and i need to list similarities and differences between them and explain why they're related. for example, whales are related or originated from mesonychids.. here's a picture: http://www.bringyou.to/apologetics/whaleevolution.gif the mesonychids are first. any animals you can think of ?. im stuck on this. i cant use whales or any kind of horse.

- Whales are descended from an artiodactyl, not from a mesonychid. The mesonychids may have nothing to do at all with whale ancestry. They may only be convergently similar to animals like the Pakicetids, which are true ancestors of whales. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pakicetidae
- The extinct dire wolf is related to the gray wolf today. There are also many other extinct animals related to modern day animals. Another example, birds are said to be related to dinosaurs.
