Why are small dogs so annoying compared to large sized dogs?
I have noticed the larger the size of the dog, the more peaceful and calm he is. Small dogs get on your nerves and they are always whining and irritating everyone. Small dogs feel very insecure and short-tempered. Most of the large breeds like newfoundland, saint bernard, mastiff, etc etc seem so easygoing.

- Any dog that is not well trained can be rather annoying. On the reverse, any dog that IS well trained and well socialized can be very easygoing and nice to deal with. Think about it from the little dog's perspective, though: What if everything in your world was over 10x your size, wouldn't you be a bit nervous too?
- I hear what youre saying.... when I bring my Malamute or Boerboel to my mother in law's house where there are 2 chihuahuas, the little guys are incessantly yapping and high-strung. the boerboel and mal just ignore them (because they are not balanced dogs and thus, are not what my dogs want to associate with). I just think little dogs are more fearful and more insecure dominant..... due to their small stature.
- Not all small dogs are annoying; it's mostly how they're raised. A lot of owners will "forgive" bad behavior from a small dog (nipping, yapping, being a general nuisance), because they all think "Who's it hurting?" (not thinking of how many times per day a vet staff member has to defend his/herself from a small dog on the warpath). However, if you take those same behaviors and apply them to a large breed dog, that's a lawsuit waiting to happen. So, owners that have large breeds tend to train their dogs better so not have that. Another problem, is most (not all) people that have small breed dogs tend to treat them like babies, which they're not, so it leads to a lot of confusion for the poor dog that ends up acting out. God gave your dog legs for a reason. Get them out of your purses and put them on leashes.
- The reason is usually because of their owners. For some reason small dog owners forget their dogs are DOGS, and set no boundries, they do not train them, and they coddle them. They think bad behavior is "cute". I say if its not cute behavior in a Great Dane, its not cute with a toy dog. Since I only associate with people who train their dogs, I can tell you every toy dog I know is well mannered and a pleasure to be around.
- It's not the small dogs that are the problem. It is the owners of the small dogs that is.
- Big dogs because of their size is harder to move for them therfore are calmer and have less energy to burn then those little yappy dogs.
- As most have said, it's not the dog/breed, it's the training. We have a 5 month old Papillon and right now, just after puppy beginner classes, he is better behaved than all the much older, large breed dogs in our extended family (this said by the owners of those other dogs, not us). I find large breed dogs annoying because the ones I personally know/have lived with, are NOT well trained at all, and I hate being jumped on and nearly knocked over, or having my arms constantly grabbed at the sleeve for attention. The attitudes of some of our family members is like, they are large and clam, so they don't need training, or Labs are easy to train ... so they don't really train their lab. Labs might be easy to train, but they don't arrive in the world trained! So as your question demonstrates, the small breed dogs you know are not well behaved, and as I've shown, there are large breed dogs out there that are also not well behaved.
- Obviously you havent met my 100 lb Lab mix. Does chewing through the wall of my shed to get to a rabbit that was hiding underneath strike you as annoying? My small dogs, on the other hand, are very quiet and well behaved.
- They're not annoying. The owners are annoying. Most owners will let small dogs get away with more bad behavior because it's "cute". If your chihuahua growls at someone for sitting next to you on the couch, it's so cute that he's protecting you because he loooooves you. If your Doberman growls at someone for sitting next to you on the couch, it's intimidating and completely unacceptable. I own a dachshund and he is just as easygoing as many of the dogs you're talking about, because he is WELL TRAINED. Don't blame the small dogs. Blame their owners for allowing them to behave that way.
- LOL. Why are so many large breed dogs untrained and so annoying as to lunge at toy breed dogs? Any dog who is not trained can be a nuisance. Size is not the issue, ignorant dog owners are.
