What is the best brand of invisible, electric fences for small dogs?
I own two small dogs and would like to let them out in my yard without having them on a leash or worrying that they will wander into oncoming traffic. I'm unsure about what brand of electric fence to purchase as well as what a reasonable price would be for such a fence.

- A real fence. If you can't put up a real fence, then you need to be outside with your dogs and leash them. Remember, an electrocution fence doesn't stop people from coming in and harming your dogs or other animals from coming in and harming your dogs. It also can cause MASSIVE psych problems. And there are plenty of dogs that will run though the shock to get what they want. I'd "like" it if my dog never pooped or vomited, but what I want and what reality is are two different things.
- They can and do fail at times, so I wouldn't bother with them. They also don't stop other critters from coming in and attacking your dogs, don't stop people from stealing them, etc. Get a real fence, and then be outside to supervise your dogs when they are outside.
- I have a 12 week old puppy and we bought him a PetSafe Wireless fencing system and it is awesome! All you have to do is plug it into an electrical outlet and set the radius (5-90 feet), adjust the 'correction level', put up flags and that's it for installation. It beeps each time they come close to the boundry then if they continue and cross, it will give them a mild shock. My dog has only been shocked once in the month we have had it, he hears the beep and knows what it means so he moves back. This is superior to the in-ground systems because you don't have to dig the trench for wiring, it's portable if so you move it's still yours and you could take it on vacation. Additionally, with the in-gound fence it beeps then shocks the animal once, when it crosses the line - making it hard for the animal to get back over the line because they will get shocked again. The wireless system keeps shocking them until they come back within the set radius, upto 90 seconds I think. Some places will charge $300 or more for it, but I got it at Lowes for $280; Pet Smart runs it on sale for $280 once in a while. Go on their websites and read reviews of the product - it is 95% positive feedback. I would highly recomend this, especially if you can get a 10% off Lowes coupon before you go! Hannah
- I use a rope to keep him outta the garden
