Do wild horses kill the old weak ones of the their pack?

My horse is really old and not doing so well, ( we plan on putting him down before winter) and the other younger horse( he is around 3 yrs.) will bite the top of his neck where his mane is and try to pull him down, he will also try and kick him. I think he is trying to kill him. Why? and what should i do?

  1. No, Tiffany. The older horse is being attacked by the younger one because the younger one is trying to establish that he's dominant, that's all. Horses are not carnivores, and do not prey on one another. You need to seperate these two horses, for the older horse's safety. It's UNFAIR AND CRUEL to him for you to allow the younger one to bully him this way. If you don't want to do this, then I'd go ahead and call your vet, and get the older horse put down before the younger one causes him to break a leg or a hip, or worse. Do you REALLY WANT to come out to your field some morning and find your older horse lying dead from a fractured skull or spine, Tiffany? If you answered no, then get busy and either seperate these horses, put the older one down, or BOTH. The 3 year old needs to be in training anyway- at his age, he's nearly old enough to be ridden and worked, and training will take some of the nonsense out of him.
