- Having had a litter of 8 and proud owner of 2, they loose hair all the time. The most is in the spring and the fall. The hair has an undercoat as they mature and this is what comes out in clumps. You'll notice it by the time they are 6-8 months old. It's like babies, they slowly lose the first hair and new stuff grows in but they will never be bald and you won't notice anything other than normal shedding. They aren't fully grown until a year and a half. To tackle the heavy shedding, I use a "furminator", they love it and it gets out the undercoat hair quickly.
- Im sure they lose their earlier coat and grow a new, thicker coat as they grow....They do lose lot of hair..you could try brushing
- yeah they do
- Moulting has nothing to do with "puppy coat" and age - it has to do with season of year. Dogs (especially those subjected to an extreme Continental climate) need to shed their winter undercoat and grow a summer undercoat. And they need to shed their summer undercoat and grow a winter undercoat. But of course most dogs will be round about one of the 6 months-apart ages when the seasons change. However, I live on the warm coast of a country with a temperate climate, and so there isn't much difference between the 2 coats needed. So most of my GSDs reach 3 or 4 years old before they are moulting enough to make it really noticeable. Those who make a fuss about GSDs shedding are unaware - almost ALL dogs shed constantly, so that they never have a patch of broken top-coat. The ones that don't shed have curly guard hairs instead of straight hairs, and so owners need to groom hard to remove dead hairs. • Add http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/The_GSD_Source to your browser's Bookmarks or Favorites so that you can easily look up such as feeding, vaccinations, worming, clubs, weights, teething, neutering, disorders, genetics. • To ask about GSDs, join some of the 400+ YahooGroups dedicated to various aspects of living with GSDs.
