Strange animal call in the middle of the night what was it?

I was camping in the woods in southern New Hampshire in late fall of last year. We had left food outside in the middle of the night and around 2 am there was two ear piercing screams that woke me up, one of my friends in the tent woke up but quickly fell back asleep, unable to recall the event in the morning. There were two high pitched screams almost like a baby crying starting quietly gradually getting louder then slowly dying down. There were two screams in quick succession each lasting about 2 seconds the second not as loud as the first. The casual explanation is that is was a fisher cat but I have heard its call before the call was similar but not the same. Does anyone have any suggestions? This event occurred about a year ago and I have always wanted to find out what kind of animal it was. It was probably one of the scariest moments in my life. http://www.partnersinrhyme.com/soundfx/animals/animals_sounds/BigCats_sounds/lion_lynx_wav.html like this a little longer

  1. First thing that came to mind was a fisher cat but a bobcat also makes a screaming almost human sound.
  2. Some kind of cat. Bobcat or Lynx.
  3. It sounds like a cougar. Cougars are reported to sound like a woman screaming.
  4. It was a ghost! OMG! GET OUT! GET OUT OF SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE RIGHT NOW!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
  5. id go with fisher or bigfoot
  6. could have been a dieing rabbit.they scream when they're hurt. ive never heard a bobcat, but i wouldn't doubt it..it's not an evil, demonic ghost coming to get you lol, don't worry.
  7. Hmmm. The fisher cat really isn't a cat at all. It is a member of the weasel family (looks like a big mink) and uses a variety of growls, hisses, and screeches to make its presence known. However, being in New Hampshire...are you sure it just isn't the double A baseball team cryin out for help?? :)
  8. kinda sounds like a fox by what you describe
  9. I'm with the dying rabbit girl. They sound disgustingly similar to a screaming baby when they get attacked.
  10. I didnt really read all of it, but the high pitched screaming sounds familiar. I heard that in my backyard one night further down the coast from NH and thought it was someone killing a dog lol. But my teacher told me what it was...i cant remember if it was foxes calling to each other or foxes killing rabbits, but i'm pretty sure its one of those.
