Are maltese puppies safe around chihuahuas?

I just got a maltese a few weeks ago that will be 3 months next week. My sister in law wants for me to take him to play with her chihuahua, would this be a good idea?

  1. Yes, if the Chihuahua is well socialized, vaccinated and has a nice even temperament in different situations.
  2. That depends on her dog. If it's well trained and socialized, then they will have a lot of fun together. If not, then one or both dogs could be hurt. If you aren't sure, have them both meet while leashed and take your puppy away if the chihuahua shows aggression.
  3. I'll say the same as Eye of the Warrior becuase I know she/he know about pets cuz she/he has best answers on pet questions. I alway see that username on the pet questions.
  4. Why bring the breed name into this? It's all in how you raised your dogs. A pitbull or great dane could get along fine with a chihuahua, while a pomeranian might attack the chihuahua.
  5. I wouldn't. First of all, mature dogs of any size play differently, but in addition, Chi's are bred to chase rodents, and any little dog like that could consider your tender little puppy a rodent. Better to find another puppy of a similar age and size as a playmate, or a very docile female Lab that likes puppies. But not a Chihuahua- they may be small, but most of them are also quite tough. Your puppy could end up getting hurt.
  6. If your sister in laws Chihuahua is up to date on all vaccinations, is well socialized, has a good temperament, is trained and well behaved, then they should get along just fine and yes it would be safe. My Chihuahuas get along with any breed. When we are out for a walk and they see someone else walking their dogs, they want to go up tails wagging and make friends!
  7. Yes. it is fine.
  8. Once all his jabs are completed and her dog is well socialised ie. gets on well with other dogs then it is a great ideas. Most dogs take very well to puppies just try not to get too involved if the chi tells your maltese off if he is being over bearing (as most pups are) as this is when you will have problems.
