why are a lot of dog lovers against mixed breeds?
when really the only purebred dogs are the wolf and coyote? Every dog breed was mixed with another to make that breed. Ok now i agree mixing breeds and selling the puppy's to make a profit is very wrong. But we got our saint bernard/ springer mix from a humane society and I think he's an awesome breed.

- Actually i think you will find that most dog lovers own mixed breeds, no self respecting dog lover ever says that purebreds are better than mixed or vice versa. What a dog lover will say is that you should not breed unless you KNOW what you're doing, you should adopt if you can from shelters and rescues, and all dogs need love regardless of breed. I spent 2 hours in my local no kill shelter this weekend and i found so many mixes i instantly fell in love with but i also own an AKC Bulldog i love em all, all shapes, sizes, and colors..
- Do you know how many times a day this question is posted? The answer is ALWAYS the same. No-one here minds mutts. Most people here have or have had a mutt. What people don't agree with are dogs being bred irresponsibly and making more mutts, or dogs being breed irresponsibly to PURPOSEFULLY make 'designer dogs' and sell them for profit purely. People don't see why perfectly good dogs should languish in shelters whilst people irresponsibly breed more mutts. That's all. If little six year old Emily hadn't run home and said her friend Daisy had a lab/retriever mix that got pregnant with a Chihuahua (for example) and begged for a puppy from the litter, her mum and dad may have visited a shelter and may have adopted a dog needing a home much worse than the new litter of puppies.
- I love mixed breeds. I got a border collie\flat coated retriever mix from the humane society, and I love my Missy. Mixed breeds are great. I think what most dog lovers, including me, hate most, is people who breed dogs irresponsibily for profit. Or people who don't get their pets fixed and then let them run loose throughout the neighborhood to get pregnant or pregnate another animal. True dog lovers don't care about the breed or if it's a pure bred, true dog lovers just love dogs.
- Dog lovers love all dogs, pure or mixed. Those that only love purebreds are fascists!
- i have no problem with mixed breeds, some of the best dogs i've ever met/owned have been mutts. currently all of my dogs are mutts from the pound. a dog lover loves all dogs. the problem most people have are back yard breeders who are only in the business for profit and people who don't have their family pets spayed/neutered and let them go around having puppies who quite often end up in already over populated shelters. and of course "designer dogs".. which are really just high priced mutts.
- I don't think it's so much dog LOVERS as dog BREEDERS or people who just like to show off their animals. I personally have nothing against mixed breeds. I have a dog who is a golden retriever/cocker spaniel mix and I absolutely adore him
- Once again. Not against mix breeds but against the people who are doing these matings, and selling the puppies for lots of money (for what isn't any 'breed') by persuading the gullible that they have something special and hanging a ridiculous name on these poor innocent puppies. Originally 'breeds' were produced for a specific purpose, be it hunting, herding, protection and so on. What's happening today is very far from that - and it mostly all revolves around money. I'm afraid your mix isn't 'a breed', awesome as he undoubtedly is.
- You do realize how often this question is asked... First, you are wrong, the wolf and coyote are not domesticated dogs, they are wild canines. Second, the definition of purebred does not mean it was never mixed, it is "denoting a pure strain obtained through many generations of controlled breeding for desirable traits" http://www.thefreedictionary.com/purebred Third, there are only a handful of people on this board that have any problem with mixed breeds. The vast majority encourage adoption or going to a reputable breeder. I would say the majority on here have at least one mix. I love all dogs, mix or purebred. What we have a problem with is intentionally breeding mixes for profit while the same ones die in shelters, particularly when they try to pass them off as a new breed.
- Dog lovers don't have a problem with mixed breeds. We have a problem with people who deliberately create mutts, give them a cute name (labradoodle, puggle, etc), and sell them for ridiculous amounts of money. Of course there are people who think that only purebred dogs are worth having, but the vast majority of us love our mutts.
- I am not against mixed breeds have had several over the years
- Nobody is against mixes. If you read the million and one times this question was asked, we are against the PURPOSEFUL BREEDING OF MIXES -- there are no "st. bernard/springer" rescues, societies or anything else that will step in and help your dog if you can no longer keep him. Purebreds do have rescues associated with the regional and national clubs, sometimes over-run with dogs like with labs and goldens, but none the less there, willing to help. Statistically, in your dog's litter YOUR DOG was the only one who will have a forever home (or will he, we don't know!). Out of any litter of mixes, generally ONE pup will have a forever home. The rest eventually end up in shelters. And old mixes aren't desirable for adoption. An old purebred has a chance. A study done on shelter intake indicated that people who get dogs from friends or relatives (assume low/no cost) are far more likely to give up their dog to the shelter than those who got purebreds from any source at all! PS -- your dog is not a "breed" he is a mix, and no wolfs and coyotes are not "purebred". If you want a very old and historic breed, try for the xolo or the basenji.
- The majority of dog lovers are like you, we dont have a problem with crossbreeds or muts its people breeding them for money they we cant stand. (no dog weither a purebreed, cross or mut should be bred for money, they should be bred to improve health, confomation, woking abilites and temperment) Ive met many nice crossbreeds and some not so nice crossbreeds and the same o for purebreeds. You also got people who look down on crossbreeds or muts but you also get people who look down on purebreeds as well.
- Most people don't hate the actual mixed dog- it's just the way it's done, and how all these dogs are just bred and dumped into shelters. now if you know what you're doing, and you have responsible people who will take and care for the dogs then most people have no problem with it. it's just when people are mixing breeds and calling them "designer dogs", and then just selling them to make a profit, THAT'S when people have a problem.
