- Vet tech's do many many things. They do pharmaceuticals, assist vet, dentistry, nursing, run equipment, they can also after school work in labs, with wild life, in zoo's, do field work.. theres many possiblities for a vet tech. I suggest that you look at a local school and see what the outline of their vet tech course is. B/c each school teaches a little bit different then the next.
- Vet techs do all the scut work. That means they clean up all the poop & pee from the animals. They also clean up the surgical room after the Vetrinarian does surgery. They clean up the blood and puss. The dispose of amputated limbs and organs after spay/neuter. They also assist the Vetrinarian with surgery, fetching instruments, gauze, and helping to retract (hold back) skin, and other body parts, so the Vet can see to do the surgery, and have their hands free. They remove sutures from animals, and get the correct medications the Vet perscribes. Sometimes they give shots, and start I.V. fluids in animals that need it. They dispose of bodies of animals that have died, or been put to sleep. They keep their mouth shut, when someone brings in an abused animal, and let the Vetrinarian deal with that. They teach owners how to clean wounds, and change bandages so the pet can go home. They learn how to safely and properly restrain animals, including large animals, like horses and cows. They learn how to slip muzzles onto cats or dogs that are in pain, and trying to bite. As for working with wildlife...some get to. It entirely depends on what the Vetrinarian they work for treats. Working with wildlife is a high demand job. That means you will be competing with a lot of other people for those jobs. You will also be competing with students who are becoming Vetrinarians, and desire more experience. Vet tech is not a high paying job. It can be rewarding, but it can also be really emotionally devistating. Can you help hold an animal, while the Vetrinarian puts it to sleep? I haven't sugar coated the job requirements...I gave you a realistic view of what Vet techs do. ~Garnet Homesteading/Farming over 20 years
