- Yes, I do mush and race dogs. No they do not use malamutes, Alaskan Huskies are primarily used. Requirement vary from race to race and usually include an age limit, some races require you qualify or have classes for competitive mushers and non-competitive sportsman or pure breed classes. Races come in different lengths, and generally racing is divided into 2 types, distance (longer races 100-1000 miles) and sprint (shorter races run at faster speeds) Here is a collection of links that will be able to give you lots of information on racing sled dogs. http://www.sleddogcentral.com/ At Sled Dog central you should also check out the links on the left for clubs, events, and mentors. You might be able to find people in your area who are mushing that you cold work with and learn from. http://www.ultimateiditarod.com/dummies.htm http://www.mushwithpride.org/ http://www.yukonquest.com/site/race-history-and-background/ http://www.mushing.com/
