Cross Breeds

What is wrong with cross breed dogs?

I will just mention that in my way do I agree with back yard breeding or breeders with little to no knowledge.... BUT it seems like people think the cross breed should wiped off this planet. I personally think they make fantastic dogs with little to no medical problems and have a good life expectancy. I also own pure bread dogs from very good respectable breeders and they are always at the vets and these dogs supposedly have great blood lines. So what is wrong with the mutt and why are pure bread dogs do fantastic in everybodys opionion? Thankyou I am not talking about the people on here, when I am out walking my dog, there seems to be a lot of people that look down on them, even know they are not aggresive or bothering anybody. Somebody actually told me once that my cross breeds should be put down!!

  1. There's nothing wrong with them. They're cheaper and healthier. I understand wanting a pure-bred; they can be beautiful. But people who won't give a mutt a chance are missing out.
  2. cross breads are dum
  3. For the goodness knows howmanyith time....no one (or almost no one) on here has a problem with mutts. We have a problem with people who intentionally or irresponsibly breed mutts. Mutts have just as may health problems as purebred dogs and often more so than well breed purebreds.
  4. I know. I have had a few mutts to go with my pure bred corgis and I had to take my corgis to the vets more times than the mutts! My last mutt lived up to the age of 16.
  5. Been there, done that. Do you have any idea how often this question has been asked by people who refuse to read and comprehend? No one here thinks there is anything wrong with mutts. Breeding them is quite another matter. If you could read and comprehend, you may have done a question search before you asked this, so you could see that you are barking up the wrong tree, so to speak. And if you have pureBREDS at the vet all the time I have news for you. You did not purchase them from a reputable breeder. Most likely pet shop dogs.
  6. I think the sentiment is against deliberately bred cross breeds, not your everyday 'mutts' It starts with sentiment against breeders in general, at least BYB-ers. "with so many dogs needing adoption already, why deliberately spawn more and more dogs?" Then - it's even worse with cross-breeds because now you're deliberately spawning mutts. Nobody's hatin on just your plain old mutts. I've got two rescue chi/something/something/something mixes, and they are awesome. They are so mutty in fact that they look completely different even tho they are littermates. One looks like a mini yellow lab, the other a gorgeous mahogany/orange brindle mini- rat/pit terrier. They have convinced me to always go the shelter/rescue route - never the breeder route. I LOVE MY MUTTS!
  7. Nothing wrong with mutts, just the people who are careless enough or stupid enough to produce litters of pups for no purpose. I have purebred dogs - mostly they live until 15 or 16 and I am SO tired of reading how much healthier crossbreeds are. Where is the evidence? My neighbours all have crossbreeds - one has fits, one is incontinent and one has really bad hip dysplasia. Another was put to sleep at 7 because she started fitting. That doesn't prove all crossbreeds are unhealthy but they aren't automatically healthier because they are mutts.
  8. We have a purebred and a mixed breed and I like the mixed breed better. She's nicer and way smarter!
  9. Where does anyone say that mixes are bad? All I ever see is people upset about the trend of mixing breeds, slapping on a stupid name and charging big bucks for a designer breed when you can get the same mix at a shelter for 1/3 the price...
  10. The problem most people have with mutts is that they take up "too much" of our "overpopulation" problem. When really the problem is we have "too much" of "irresponsible" owners, and not enough of responsible ones. There is nothing wrong with a mutt---just the fact that the breeders were irresponsible. Mutts make great pets---and it's always fun to tell people what mix your dog is. I own a yorkie/australian shepherd mix. No one thinks it's possible, until they see my dog!!! I find nothing wrong with mutts. The irresponsible people who breed them, that's a problem. Yes, SOMETIMES there are accidents, and stray dog mate, but then, it's still a human fault--somewhere along the lines, one of those dogs had a home. Get me?
  11. i thiink there is no problem with cross breed dogs, most of the cross breed dogs have a longer life line and alot of cross breed dogs look nicer aswell i used to have a dalmation -retriever cross and never seen anything like that black very tall dog(dalmation) smart(retriever) white socks and white belly with white spots(dalmation)
  12. They're angry all the time ?......totally above your heads I know but there you are... Dog "owners" obviously have no sense of humour....woof, woof my dawgs bigger than yours.....jump into the pickup Rex we're going tracking niggas
  13. NOTHING!AT ALL! My dog Muppet is a Heinz 57 (Street accident) and is the third dog like this I have had!She has been fixed so no babies from her adding to the growing amount of these dogs. She is loving :o) Barmy :o0 Super friendly , she runs away from other aggressive dogs, sleeps with me (piccie above) plays football really well! I wish my mum praised me as much when I bring back a dead mouse, as much as she does when Muppet brings back a muddy ball! But thats life..... And enriched by a mutt......or any dog really......because weather you have been out 4 ten minutes or a few hours a dog will give you a happy wag of the tail.
  14. Here's a question for you - if you don't believe in bybs, I assume you don't approve of dogs just randomly breeding. Where do mutts come from then? So where do mutts/cross breed dogs come from if not from irresponsible dog owners? I love my mutt, she's a great dog. She most likely would have been dead if a rescue group hadn't decided to drag her to New England from Arkansas. My other dog is purebred and aside from his own stupidity he's almost never at the vet's office for anything. My breeder made sure both parents have good hearts prior to breeding. My breeder had both parents tested for Ataxia. It's a clause in the contract that we have to bring the dogs to a cardiologist (on her dime) to have their hearts checked to make SURE they don't have heart problems. That is a responsible breeder creating excellent dogs.
  15. Once again, I think you will find that most people around here have absolutely nothing against mutts. What they are against is people producing them, when Rescue Centres are stuffed full already. And further, putting two perfectly good breeds together, and giving them a 'fancy name' (= costing loads of money) when they are 'just' mutts.
  16. I love mutts! That is why it breaks my heart to watch them *daily*, being killed by the thousands in shelters. There is nothing wrong with a good ol mutt, and I always recommend that a prospective dog owner check out the local shelter to see if there is a dog there that will fit their lifestyle and steal their hearts. But, if people are wanting a specific breed for a specific purpose, then get a dog from a *reputable* breeder. The bad news is..You did NOT get your purebreds from a *reputable* breeder, but only from someone who *marketed* themselves as such. A reputable breeder will NOT sell a genetically unsound or sick dog. Period Hundreds of breeders can convince you they are a good breeder. They may even "think" they really are a reputable breeder. BUT, if they did not do genetic testing..If they sold you a sick dog..If they produce unsound dogs.. They are NOT a reputable breeder. For Pete's sake.. If you want a mutt..get a wonderful one from the shelter before it is put to sleep.. Don't buy from a backyard breeder, which only encourages them to breed more.
  17. There's nothing wrong with mutts. The problem comes from people who fancy themselves to be breeders when they really don't know what they're doing, what genes they are passing on, and are more interested in either homing cute little fluffy puppies or selling those cute little fluffy puppies for obscene amounts of cash...or both. Cockapoos are fine. Goldendoodles are fine. The problem is that they are marketed as if they were a new, legitimate breed when they are not bred past first or second generation crosses because, guess what, actually creating a true breed requires them to consistently breed true to a physical and temperamental standard. These dogs are not a breed, they are mutts, but are marketed as something shiny and extra special to unwitting buyers who are fooled into thinking these dogs are worth a thousand bucks per pup without any kennel club registration, without proof of parents' health, and often even without shots and worming. I love mutts. I have a problem with the backyard breeders who contribute to the dog overpopulation and shelter overload. Did you know that 3/4 of all dogs wind up in the shelter, on the streets, abused, or killed? Can you ethically say it's okay to keep indiscriminately breeding designer mutt breeds when only 1/4 of them will ever find a happy, permanent home?
  18. " I also own pure bread dogs from very good respectable breeders and they are always at the vets and these dogs supposedly have great blood lines." Were you given a genetic health guarantee? Did you see proof of parent's health clearances? Two unhealthy dogs whether the same breed or different will not produce healthy pups end of story. Bybs do not produce sound animals with consistently. They don't give two shits about producing healthy pups. No one has problems with mutts its the BREEDERS and the people who BUY THEM we have a problem with. How many times and how many different ways does this have to be said before you and every other mutt owner who can't comprehend simple English get it? I have seen just as many sickly mutts as I have badly bred purebreds.
  19. Its not the dog itself its the person breeding them. Responsible breeders do not mix dogs. And mutts are not healthier than purebreds. Great Bloodlines? is that what they told you? if it was than it sounds like ma and pa weren't CH. and that is not responsible.
  20. I have no problem with mixed breeds, but I do have a problem with the extremely high prices they charge for them. In our local paper someone was selling a labradoodle for £900 which is really high for, well, basically a mutt. A breed has to be around for 50 plus years before the kennel club can accept them as a pure breed - like the jack russell, they still haven't accepted them as a pure breed & are still considered a mutt. It just annoys me that a labradoodle which is new breed should be priced so high, just because they are considered "fashionable" xxx
  21. Crossbreeds are not interbred like some of the pedigree dogs. For example the aunt with the cousin. Or the original father with the cousin. Causing breeding of the same weaknesses. If two pedigree dogs mate with weaknesses of course there could be a problem. There are a LOT of pedigree dogs around these days. So you can never be sure of the line. Years ago there were not so many pedigree dogs and dogs were allowed to stray out of the garden. Became impregnated with another mixed breed dog and the result were usually strong little puppies. I do not think mating a large dog with a small one is a very good idea. Especially if the small one happens to be the female. The puppies would probably kill her when they were born. The only real thing wrong with pedigree breeding is people. They interbred and pass on any weaknesses. You never know when you buy 'any' dog pedigree or mutt what will or will not happen with it's health. It is always a risk. Like humans we do not know what our health will be. We are all mutts so to speak. In villages hundreds of years ago they interbred and had many problems with mental children and deformed children being born. This is a vast interesting subject and could be discussed more. Dogs and people.
  22. Since I have answered this question 157,392 times in the past month or so, I am just going to cut & paste my last answer: Please show us the links that say that mutts are bad dogs. Seriously. I want to see them. *NO ONE* has ever said that to my knowledge. I love ALL dogs. I happen to enjoy showing as a hobby, so that means I have purebred dogs. I don't think they are better than a mutt, but it is my personal preference. I *DO* have a problem with the BYBs that breed mutts on purpose and lie and scam, saying they are healthier than purebreds and more intelligent, hypoallergenic, non-shedding, blah blah blah. Do me a favor- all you mutt owners stop putting our purebreds down. We don't put YOUR dogs down. We love our dogs the same as you love your mutts. Just leave us alone about it. I have never tried to force anyone into getting a purebred. Give us the same respect, please. With the addition- Mutts are NOT healthier that purebreds. They are not more intelligent, they are not easier to train, they are not more interesting, they do not have more personality. I know mutts with hip dysplasia, who bite, who fight other dogs, who have seizures, etc. Let's all just love our dogs and drop this subject once and for all, OK??????
  23. I agree with Chetgo.
  24. Nothing, who said there was something wrong with cross-breeds? "I personally think they make fantastic dogs with little to no medical problems and have a good life expectancy" - that's great but it was clearly just down to chance your dogs have had fantastic health. It's the luck of the draw. "also own pure bread dogs from very good respectable breeders and they are always at the vets and these dogs supposedly have great blood lines." - Breeding isn't 100%. My grandad bought his dog from a reputable breeder, the dog is 3 and has a heart murmur. That was just bad luck. Most of us here love mutts but hate the people who produce them. There's a difference. Mutts are great but not all are perfect. The same goes for purebreds.
  25. You are mistaken about a healthier dog that is a mix versus a purebred dog. It depends on who is doing the breeding. Its a 50/50 chance with a mixed breed dog to have medical problems or living long. If the parents are poor quality dogs with no medical testings, then you can have a lot of problems with the puppies created. Usually backyard breeders and mills will breed dogs to death just to make money and neither of them tests the dogs or has healthy dogs to start. A reputable breeder of purebreds is more careful because they research the backgrounds/pedigrees, test their dogs for genetic problems and only breed the best to the best. They don't breed unhealthy (genetic) dogs together. I've had both and have had good and bad medical problems with mixes as well as purebreds. We have a resuced Lab right now - she was free, but we had to pay for spaying her and going thru heartworm treatment cause the previous owners kept her outside unprotected and she got heartworms because of it. She's been healthy so far. In the future we plan on getting a parti-color miniature poodle from a reputable breeder the tests the dogs and shows them.
  26. There's nothing wrong with mutts... Mutts are often wonderful. I live with a mutt and he's a great dog. There are good and bad dogs of every breed... I don't look down at mutts, I look down at the @ssholes who breed them for absolutley no porpuse at all. Mutts are fine as pets, Agility, hunting (now that I think of it, almost everything!) but not show dogs. Mutts shouldn't be bred, because the porpuse is nearly always "for fun". And who breeds for fun... No comments on that. People often produce designer breeds, a cross between two - take, for instance, the "Labradoodle" - and call it a purebred. However, to be a purebred, beyond others, when bred together, the dogs must originate a dog that looks like them. But they originate the most diferent puppies from generation to generation. We don't like purebreds to be called mutts and the opposite way, because we believe that they are separate things. However, your question should be "what is wrong with purebreds?" because people are more and more falling on the BYB trap. BYB's tell you LIES like: *Mutts are nicer *Mutts are healthier *Mutts are better than the snobby show dogs *Mutts get happier with less *Mutts are simply better! So you see... It's a disgrace! (-sight-)
  27. A dog person will love a dog regardless of its "breed" but moreso based on personality. I understand what you are getting at tho. Mutts are dogs produced BY irresponsible pet owners. We all have the fondest memory of the Heinz 57 we once had and by no means ONLY love purebreds. The problem arises because nowadays you can find these purposely crossed breeds sell for twice as much as either purebred would. This in turn makes the village idiot think "hey I can breed my lab shepherd doxie cross and make some BIG money by giving it a stupid name. That is the part of MUTTS folks here are against. Most of us get annoyed at the several breeding questions a day on here. Why? Because these people are being ignorant and in the end lives suffer. You can gain much more knowledge of the basic breeding questions answered here by googling it, contacting your vet, or getting in touch with a local breeder. I have mentored a litter of "accidents". My vet referred this person to me to help them along with the basics. I am more than willing to help out someone who personally asks for my help and are trying to do right for the dog. But someone who wants to breed their pretty lil poodle to the neighbors shih-tzu. I honestly have no time for. There truly is too many dogs sitting in shelters, homeless on the streets, in pounds and rescues. Yet, folks think they can breed Fifi to Fido with no regard to either animal or its health just for the ultimate goal to make some money by deceiving some uneducated person. Mutts will always be...I love my past mutts altho I only own purebreds now. I would certainly open my home to the right mutt at any time. I, however, would NEVER go out in search for a particular cross of dogs and PAY lots of money for it. If you are willing to pay for a dog, then support a breeder who is doing the breed good by striving to improve genetics.
  28. I have, as do many others, nothing against mongrels at all. I think they can make fantastic dog, and as have been bred with other breeds, can have a much smaller amountof health problems. Obviously, personalities, as in humans, can vary from dog to dog, but I think they make brilliant pets. I think the 'obsession' with pure breeds (not really an obsession, just a lot of people like them) is that people feel special if they have a purebreed. Mongrels can often turn ppeopleway who have little knowledge of what they are like, and prefer to go for dogs that are classified, and known, and 'this sort of breed' has 'this and that' and all of that jazz. But I do think irresponsible breeders are not good. Inbreeding can occur, offspring can be illegally killed if people cannot get rid of the pups, and it can just make life miserable for dogs. But, well, if I personally had to choose from any type of dog, I would get a mongrel.
  29. Because they are not a purebred dog!!! They usually have problems because they are a mix of breeds...
  30. Nothing! They are great dogs! I have a Jug(Jack Russell Terrier/Pug Mix), and she is the GREATEST! She has the best of both breeds! <3 Ignore the ignorant; they don't know what they're missing!
  31. ignore the people who tell u to put down yr cross breeded dog. i have dogs and most of them are cross breeds i mean just to tell you cross breeds are awesome without much illness one and only, none of the other dogs will ever look lyk yr cross breed and they hve gud personality(well most) for pure breeds its probally lyk u noe inn harry potter the purebloods n non-pure wats the difference? but i guess wat the people see in the pure breed dogs are that they just look nice and they WILL have a good personality lyk the golden retrivers n labradors.... well for me i dont care pure breeds or cross breeds its the dog that counts :) hope i helped ...
  32. Nothing at all is wrong with a mixed breed dog.... in fact, many people enjoy a mixed breed better for several reasons. Namely, a mixed breed has the ability to have the best traits of 2 breeds or more. For example, an Anatolian Shepherd mixed with a Border Collie might have the ability to both guard a flock exeptionally well, and herd them too...also probably would be smarter than an Anatolian purebred due to Border collie genes.. you see? Others owners, myself included, prefer to know exactly what type of temperament they are getting when they get a dog. Do they want a protector/guardian or a speedy work out partner? An avergage-intellect lazy lapdog, or a smart-as-a-whip energetic herder? Some people require a certain dogs, like working breeds or guardians, and they will want to know exactly what they are getting with no suprises. No one hates a mutt, I dont think... I love mixed breeds and I enjoy trying to figure out what purebreeds they could be made up of!
