How dangerous are greyhounds and should I be worried?

I am wondering just how dangerous are greyhounds. A neighbor owns two greyhounds that are unregistered which she walks everyday unmuzzled (Which is against the law) and recently has been deliberately letting them off their leash (Also against the law) as she reaches our yard She then lets the dogs walk alone in front of our yard while she goes into her own yard causing my dogs to bark. .The greyhounds have been blooded, one jumped the fence a few months ago and killed one of our chickens. She cried and said it was unusual behavior for her dog even though it was a racing dog and because it didn't kill the chicken outright it was probably trying to play with it (We had to put the chicken down because of its injuries) She sees no wrong in what she is doing instead saying the bigger problem is my dogs barking whenever she walks her dogs. Asking her to leash the dogs when she takes them for a walk has just resulted in her screaming and swearing at us about how our dogs (Both puppies under 12 months of age) bark when she walks her dogs. So am I wrong in being concerned?

  1. I would be concerned too, She sounds awful. If a chicken died she should be apologetic not cussing you. And she should have her dog on the leash! Who cares if your dogs bark? Your dogs did not kill one of her animals! I don't think it is the animal to blame here. It is the owner of the greyhounds.
  2. Greyhounds are typically not dangerous. They are very loving, but can be timid. The problem is that she isn't respecting the rest of the world by letting them off of the leash. Try to approach her kindly about keeping the dogs leashed in your neighborhood. If she doesn't comply, call an ASPCA officer. They will handle it.
  3. Greyhounds are not known for being aggressive at all. They are sight hounds & she is stupid for letting them off leash. You are not catching one on foot. I know, my sis's grey got away from me when I was keeping her & had to chase down in the car. Report her to animal control. Report her if there are any more injuries to your animals. They are trained to race by chasing prey around the track so I wouldn't trust them not to go after them again. But they are not generally HA or DA.
  4. Greyhounds are actually wonderful dogs. I have never met an aggressive one to humans. HOWEVER, ones that are rescued from the race track can often never be trusted with small animals because they see them as prey (hence the dead chicken). It is illegal for her to have unregistered dogs and you should report it. You could also mention that she is letting them off leash in your yard. She needs to own up to her responsibility as a dog owner and follow the town guidelines. So basically, I don't see you or your puppies being in any danger of these dogs, however, I would seriously consider talking to her or the town clerks office about the fact that she has two illegally owned dogs.
  5. I wouldn't consider greyhounds dangerous. But they can be aggressive. If she's breaking the law, she's in the wrong. Your dogs are being dogs, and telling hers to stay off of their property. If her dogs are retired race dogs you could contact the placement group for retired greyhounds and report her. Those dogs are not sold they are adopted, and she is supposed to meet certain requirements to maintain her guardianship of them. Your concern is genuine in the aspect of her mistreating her dogs and breaking the law.
  6. They are not dangerous at all... they are just not properly trained... just like a dog that pulls its owner on walks, it doesn't mean it's dangerous, just that it's not properly trained... They are fast, timid, slender, friendly dogs bred to chase prey... those dogs just have an untrained owner... if they and the owner both you, call an ASPCA officer... but she'll always be mean to you, especially if you call an offficer because she just seems to have "my dogs can do know wrong" attitude and, of course, most people's dogs are their babies...
