Cross Breeds

My adult guinea pig has ear mites, can I use something labeled for dogs, cats, and rabbits?

I have a product made by Four Paws called Ear Mite Remedy. It does contain .10% pyrethrins and aloe to sooth the discomfort.

  1. All you have to do is call your vet and ask they will not make you bring him in unless you describe it as an insane infection. Or go to your pet store and ask them also.
  2. that will work fine on a guinea pig. i had a guinea pig that got ear mites once and i used rabbit mite medicine. but just to be sure i would call your vet and ask.
  3. How can you be sure they aren't just 'mites' in general and they are only noticably visible on the ears where there is less hair? I had a rat with mites and she needed a series of injections from the vet once a week for a month to clear it up.
  4. well it should be okay but some products may not be sensitive enough for guinea pigs - i would call the vet to make sure
  5. It would be best to see a vet. Many over-the-counter products contain pesticides that are harmful to guinea pigs, and you would hate to take a chance at your guinea pig's expense. The vet should prescribe an injection or topical application of Invermectin, repeated again 18 days later. Invermectin is very effective and very safe for guinea pigs. Best of luck. The article below has great information on ear mites.
  6. Take them to the vet or use small animal mite killer.
  7. Your best bet would be to visit a vet or give them a call to ask if they think it is okay, It should be okay if it is for small animals but you have to be sure that you are not dosing too little or too much. You could even give a breeder or rescue centre a call i am sure they would be happy to give advice.
  8. I'd bet it is mites ( the all over kind) as opposed to ear mites. Invermectin is sold online for horses. No vet fees. You give them a pea sized amount of the cream on the back of their front teeth once every 10 days, either one or two times. If you offer your piggy fresh parsley he might be a bit more willing, apparently it is pretty unpleasant tasting.
