Cross Breeds

Do you think it is bad to mix dog breeds. Want to cross miniature schnauzer with shiba inu?

I want to have my male miniature schnauzer have puppies with a shiba inu. Will other people be less likely to want to take them in? As far as health goes they would probably have lower odds of genetic diseases that are associated with either breed if there are any. But I am concerned no one will want to adopt any. I would keep one myself and the owners would keep one, so that means that there would be 4 left. Do people look down on mixed breeds. I think some have recently become popular, like the schnoodle. Maybe I could call this a schnauba. I am not looking for dog haters to tell me to get him neutered. That is a useless answer for someone looking for ways to breed them. And you don't understand genetics if you think that bad characteristics "build up." By mixing the gene pools there is a lower chance a disease which is unique to the breed will be inherited. This is healthier for the puppies that will be born. And I am not looking to adopt. I want my dog to have puppies. He is more than a pet to entertain me. He is a living creature. I don't think you even love dogs if you want to neuter them so don't waste time by talking about it. Several studies have shown that mixed-breed dogs have a health advantage. A German study finds that "Mongrels require less veterinary treatment".[4] Studies in Sweden have found that "Mongrel dogs are less prone to many diseases than the average purebred dog"[5] and, referring to death rates, “Mongrels were consistently in the low risk category”.[6] Another study reports that “The median age at death was 8,5 years for all mixed-breed dogs and 6,7 years for all pure breed dogs... For each weight group, the age at death of pure breed dogs was significantly less than for mixed-breed dogs”,[7] and a study in Denmark finds that "Higher average longevity of mixedbreed dogs (grouped together).[8] -Wikipedia Anyone with a basic understanding of genetics will know that mixing breeds is healthier "There is NO reason to breed your dog other than the fact you and the owners of the shiba are bored." Like I already said I don't consider my dog to be only entertainment. It's not at all because I'm bored. He has the right to keep his body parts and should not be mutilated like many of the sad dogs you irresponsible owners have been abusing. And if you think your kind find a reference that can dispute mine be my guest. The studies have shown mixed breeds are healthier. They live longer and have less genetically inherited diseases. I dont think you can love dogs if you want to add to the over population problem just to satisfy your own selfish whims. You can easily find a Schnauzer mix to adopt and save a life. I don't think you love dogs if you want to cut off their body parts. The shiba is a dog he gets along well with and I am friends with the owner, we are already talking about doing this. And don't talk about my references when you have none of your own that claim breeding within the same breed is better. It increases the chances they will have diseases which has already been proven. Good luck with your inbred dogs with mutilated bodies everyone, I can see that there are no opinions here worth listening to yet. So I will just go ahead and breed them. I hope someone can contribute beneficially to this by suggesting a breed name. I still like Schniba. :)

  1. The world doesn't need any more "designer" mutts with fancy names. Get your pet quality schnauzer neutered and enjoy him as a pet. Do yourself a favor and walk through a shelter in your area and take a look at the thousands of unwanted dogs being killed every day because no one wants them. A little education goes a long way towards helping to solve the problem.
  2. Yes, it is bad. Why? Because you take all the problems one dog has and breed it with all the problems the other dog has and all you have left is a problem dog. There are mutts out there that need homes in shelters. Stop making "designer" breeds to make $$$$ and give a real dog a home.
  3. I am going to be one of the first to say it get your female spayed and don't be a BYBer, You are going to get a lot of comments on this topic so please dont do it. You can spout all the stats you want, but the numbers in rescues and pounds and shelters are what counts. And also when people breed pure bred dogs there are no reasons for genetic defects to be there because we have bred them out of out dogs. There is no facts to prove that mixed breed dogs live longer and are healthier dogs. I have some of the most beautiful, decease, and defect free dogs in the world. But they will never be bred to another breed of dog.
  4. I certainly wouldn't. That's a nightmare waiting to happen. Shibas are difficult enough breed w/o adding a very overbred breed with a ton of health issues & tends to be high-strung with one. No one would pay for one & why risk the health of the mother & possibly the pups just b/c you want to see what one would look like. Not nearly a good reason & we don't need more pets to be put down Add; Sorry but that has already been proven to be untrue. Mixes are not healthy than purebreds & depending on the parents they can end up with double the bad traits & health problems.
  5. I would like to correct you one this "Anyone with a basic understanding of genetics will know that mixing breeds is healthier." - And that's where you are WAY wrong. "I don't think you even love dogs if you want to neuter them so don't waste time by talking about it." - WHAT?! You sound like a horrible dog owner, I believe you don't deserve to own a dog. If you think your a smart - a.s.s that you can copy and paste of Wikipedia, well hear this, ANYONE can edit that website's information. I'd guess 60% of that information is false. It's actually healthier for them to be spayed/neutered! You're a sick person. You sound like a BYB [[back yard breeder]] to me. People like this make me sick. They try to get their dog to have puppies just so they can have a little extra money in their hands. If you lived in my area I would report you in a flash. Hope you get caught.
  6. Mixed breed dogs are NOT healthier. Sure, the chances of diseases become less, but the dog is also prone to MORE genetic dieseases...the ones from each breed. And if the dogs are genetically prone to the SAME diseases (such as hip dysplaisia, for example)...then how, exactly, is that any different? Besides...there are hundreds of thousands of dogs in shelters--both pure and mixed--and thousands of people breeding *every day*. Do you really think the world needs more mutts--or pets--? If you want a mutt, ADOPT. Add: Rachel is correct about Wikipedia. And..uh, how exactly does the desire to lower health risks (such as cancer) make me a bad dog owner?
  7. I have neutered both my dogs BECAUSE I love them . I want to make sure they're happy and healthy . They're too many dogs in animal shelters . Go to your local shelter and have a look at the dogs there , those dogs are unwanted and depending on what kind of shelter it is , are going to be put down . Don't add to that and risk your dogs life .
  8. Well you have demonstrated that YOU lack the basic understanding of genetics yourself. There are VERY FEW genetic issues that are unique to any one breed. So tell me MR know it all, btw quoting Wikipedia does NOT bolster your argument, has you dog had the full battery of tests for his breed? PRA? CERF? Myotonia Congenita? OFA? Another reason why you SHOULDN'T breed "I would keep one myself and the owners would keep one, so that means that there would be 4 left. " Says who? Can you see into the future and know that this dog will have EXACTLY 6 pups? There is NO reason to breed your dog other than the fact you and the owners of the shiba are bored. No one looks down on mutt we DO however look down on the people who breed them. "Like I already said I don't consider my dog to be only entertainment. It's not at all because I'm bored. He has the right to keep his body parts and should not be mutilated like many of the sad dogs you irresponsible owners have been abusing." Letting your dog remain intact does NOT give a free pass on breeding him irresponsibly. He's already been "mutilated" in some people's eyes since he has a docked tail and cropped ears more than likely so you can stuff the mutilation debate. here are some COUNTER arguments not that I think you actually care and aren't just trolling. http://home.comcast.net/~NoPuppyMillsVA/Poo-dogs___Designer_Mutts/Genetics_and_Hybrid_Vigor/genetics_and_hybrid_vigor.html
  9. I was going to pass by this question as just another Backyard greeder- until I saw " I don't think you even love dogs if you want to neuter them so don't waste time by talking about it." W....t.......f...... You think your dog wants to be a "daddy"? Then you know NOTHING about basic biology and you have no business breeding. EDIT- I am startign to think this is a troll. I mean, who could be *THIS* stupid and HEARTLESS besides some bored ten year old? IF you aren't a troll, I hope your dogs are sterile and you are too.
  10. Yes its bad. Why breed your dog? You want him to have puppies? And you chose a Shiba because its the most readily available female? Thats' just assinine. For one, mixing doesnt cancel out health issues.. actually it gives a wider range of health problems the puppies can be prone to. Anyone with a basic understanding of genetics knows that if a dog carries a gene for a genetic problem it can still pass that problem on to the pups... introducing a dog that has a different set of health problems doenst cancel that out. Mini Schanuzers are prone to Cataracts PRA Urinary Tract issues Pancreatis Cushings Hypothyroidism Liver Shunts Epilepsy Juvinile Kidney Failure Auto Immune defects Heart defects Dental Problems Shibas are prone to Luxating patella hip displasia hereditary eye problems (including cataracts and PRA) Allergies Dental problems Heart murmurs Kidney Disease Liver Disease Legges Perthe Thyroid Problems Autoimmune There's several issues here that both breeds share Cataracts PRA Dental Issues Heart problems AutoImmune Thyroid Problems Liver and Kidney problems And you think mixing breeds will cancel those issues out? HA! Wikipedia is a poor source of information.. anyone can edit and change information to their liking.. find a reliable website with such kingo. There's less information about mixes having problems because its not so easy to keep accurate records.. many people who have mixes also do NOT bother to get proper care for their dogs.. its a dog they obtained cheaply, assume its "just a dog" and dont bother to provide care. The healthiest dogs are from REPUTABLE breeders who do proper genetic health tests and research pedigrees and genetics.. wiki doesnt count as research. I dont think you can love dogs if you want to add to the over population problem just to satisfy your own selfish whims. You can easily find a Schnauzer mix to adopt and save a life. ADDED If you think dogs have a concept of what those parts are for, then you are an IDIOT. There's no proof that mixing creates healthy dogs. Breeders who do PROPER HEALTH TESTS to rule out disease is what creates healthy dogs. You obviously dont know a thing about genetics if you think such a randome breeding will create healthy dogs... I already pointed out health issues the breeds share. http://petcare.suite101.com/article.cfm/responsible_dog_and_cat_breeding http://media.www.thebatt.com/media/storage/paper657/news/2008/03/17/MailCall/Mutts.Not.Better.Than.Purebreds-3271386.shtml http://www.petlvr.com/blog/2009/02/are-mutts-really-healthier/ Good luck figuring out what to do with the rest of the litter of unwanted MUTTS. What a greedy, irresponsible pet owner you are! You should be ashamed of yourself!
