  1. Fairbanks area is home to many world class long distance and sprint mushers. Although you also see many in the Knik area. And Willow seems to have an active sprint race circuit. Sled Dog Central keeps a good calendar of mushing events to give you an idea where races are located. AS far as living, just find an area with good access tot he type of trails you want to train on, you will most likely travel for races. http://www.sleddogcentral.com/schedules/race_schedules.htm
  2. I live in Alaska. My ex was a spring racer - we had 20+ doggie in our front yard. The majority of recreational sled dog racing is done in Alaska's Interior - the Fairbanks area. However, considering the racket dogs make at feeding time - you need to move 15 or mile from town before you are in areas friendly to dog yards. Not too bad, really. The big up side to Fairbanks over the rest of Alaska for dogs - Fairbanks has several active racing and mushing clubs, they have nearly a thousand miles of trail groomed all winter long for our dogs to run - and - in the summer there are 40 miles of trails groomed so you can put wheels on your sleg and still exercise your dogs. Hope this helps
