- Dogs are a sub species of the wolf. Humans have changed their shapes and sizes through selective breeding over many years.
- dogs were not necessarily "bred from wolves".. there is some speculation that dogs may have evolved from some other wild canid, which may be the ancestor to both dogs and wolves. It took YEARS of selectivly breeding dogs that were slightly smaller.. until they slowly decreased in size.
- There are many old breeds of dogs and from cross breeding to get the desired traits they cam up with many Designer Dogs through the centuries.
- They formed from other species of canine also. Dingos may be even one, its really weird and technical, though humans have done the same. How do you think yao ming is asian and got that tall? xD
- I don't think they are directly bred from wolves. In fact I believe it is just a myth, like humans evolved from monkeys/apes/orangutans. Selective breeding is also a help.
- with selective breeding. they bred the smallest of a litter with another smallest of the litter. cross breeding and in breeding. When you breed brother to sister and daughter to father you get genetic mutations. which is why the majority of the dog breeds have severe genetic defects. an example is hip displasia. The golden retriever, for instance, was developed in the 1850's from 4 pups from the same litter.
