How do I find the CORRECT information on bringing my 2 Chihuahua puppies from Mexico to the UK in 3 Months?

I am a British Citizen, Living in Cancun, Mexico. I am looking for the correct information on how to prepare my puppies on enterying the UK in March. I have very little time to do this, and am finding it very difficult to know the correct information on travel with them from Mexico to UK/Ireland. Please any help would be so much appreciated.

  1. Get in touch with the airline you'll be using and see what the regulations are.
  2. The only absolute failproof way to be sure is to CALL THE BRITISH COUNSEL - very simple. Alternately, you can go to their website and check regulations for bringing dogs into the UK. They have relaxed the terribly stringent quarantines from most countries, but you need to be absolutely sure that your dogs have the right vaccinations and health records from a vet.
  3. Have a look at the site link http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pets/pets/travel/index.htm It is DEFRA that deal with all of this here. But I think you are going to be somewhat disappointed in that entry into the UK from most countries still require the dogs to be put into quarantine for 6 months. There is a pet passport available from some countries and you need to look on the website to see if that includes Mexico, but to be honest I doubt it. Even if they can travel on a pet passport, the regulations they stipulate still might not enable them to travel with you at this time. I am going to see if I can find Mexico on the list for you. Had a look and Mexico is on the list that states ............. "Pets that come from any of these countries can also enter the UK under PETS as long as they meet the rules." PETS is the passport scheme. See if you can find a contact email address for DEFRA and enquire there. They are the governing body for bringing pets into the country. Found it for you helpline@defra.gsi.gov.uk....... Sorry my post is all in bits but kept going back to the site to look.
  4. It is my understanding that a dog must be quarantined for 6 months before it can enter the UK. My breeder had a female here under quarantine to that amount of time before she could be shipped. Sadly, that meant she was no longer a puppy when she got to her final home in the UK. But that is the UK rules, at least it was last year.
  5. Your pat will have to have a pet passport and rabies shots. The rabies shots will HAVE to be given (and a titre reading made) six months before leaving the country. If you get the shots straight away, then your dogs will have to stay in quarantine for the remaining time (3 months). This is what happened with our cat (she had her shots two months before moving, and was in quarantine for four months). There are many good quarantine kennels throughout the country, but they are a bit pricey. Check the DEFRA site for info on all this.
  6. Call your local consulate. They can tell you what you need to do to expedite the process and keep your dogs out of quarantine.
