If you want the Brazil nuts you have to get one of these fruits and crack it open, but it's dangerous to be near the tree when it's dropping fruit. ;)

It provides a good place for the algae to grow, because there is a place for the algae to anchor into (the groove) the air is moist, the sloth is always in a tree where it gets more sunshine than it would on the ground, and the sloth does not groom the algae off. Algae does not grow on sloths because they are -slow-.
