Would it be possibly to legally ride a couple of horses down the highway median?

No, I'm not seriously about to do that. I'm writing a book and in it there's a horse race and someone told me that it would be really cool to have the horses race down the median of a highway. I'm wondering if its possible to do that, let alone if its legal. Here's a picture of what I'm talking about. http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/blogs/themoment/posts/111708highway.jpg Thanks for all your help!

  1. Assuming Interstates all have the same laws (I would think so, since they are federal?) then you can't legally ride a horse on an interstate. If you found a highway that was divided, maybe you could come up with something storywise, but an interstate wouldn't be believable. Maybe more credible would be a race down the median of an old, unused highway? I'm going to guess that you would get cited for reckless driving ( or the horse equivilent) if you raced down a highway that was actually being used by cars.
  2. Of course not. I know my self and you seem clever enough to know that that would be terribly silly don't you agree. You seem lovely and I will like to answer any more of your questions on horses. Have a lovely rest of your day and thank you for my 2 points.
  3. No, highways are limited to motor vehicles only, and the government owns the land in between them so you couldn't just go riding down it! On top of that, people throw all sorts of nasty things out of car windows. I wouldn't want to ride a horse where there could be broken glass, trash, et cetera.
  4. It's not legal, but depending on what time period your book is, racing down town streets was legal before the autos came along. If your book was completely fictional than it wouldn't matter, but if you are trying to stay as true as possible than I would find somewhere else for the horse race. Good luck!!
  5. Not federal interstates, but some divided state highways that may not restrict equestrian traffic. (such as NM84 and NM60) But it would be more plausible on a very rural stretch, since a lot of less rural areas have turn lanes that would interfere with footing (going from grass to asphalt, no fun!). Sounds exciting though! Are they racing cars?
  6. no. you cannot ride a horse down the highway. it's far too dangerous and very very illegal. hell, you aren't even allowed to WALK down them, never mind ride. in order to do that the highway would need to be closed.
